If it sounds like a timing chain issue then its most likly a timing chain, only way to know for sure is to replace the timing chan and gears, kinda a big job to do.

How do you know if the timing chain is going out . 97 lincoln contenintal

I suggest you ask an experienced person listen to the noise.

Hydraulic tappets can click for a while after starting and usually aren't anything to worry about unless the noise becomes louder, harsher and more pronounced as the engine speed increases.

If the clicking is suspected to be timing chain related it would be very unwise to ignore it.

How many miles on it? I have similar engine, and when oil is low, the timing chain tension system doesn't. At 120000 miles, I need to replace sparkplugs. I understand you can get the same sound when it needs new plugs... It's a pain to do.

I have a 2007 mazda cx7,it makes a very loud noise from the engine.like a broken timing chain, but drives well apart from the loud noise at all times hot or cold its the same sound loud rattling sound.from...

could be time for a new timing set. depends how many miles are on the engine and if something has gone wrong. they don't last forever and the belts need to be change every 75k to 100k to save doing damage to the valves and piston if it were to break. the chains will last a lot longer but still wear out

2007 Gran Vitara engine noise when start

old post.zero help, so here i am, filling the hole for next person.

the V6 has no cam belt. it's a chain drive.
how many miles on v6 motor.?
the chain runs 2 times longer than a belt. easy. or more.
the hydraulic adjusters may not, when not doing oil changes on time.
the start up noise is normal (not mine) but the factory TSB covers this, on higher mileage v6,
the engine starts and the chain , or lifters can make noise
until oil pressure reaches normal. (0w oil can be and issue here)
i run 10w40 all year, and mine runs like new, all the time. 100k miles on my block.
if the noise stops , after few seconds the TSB is clear on that.
its normal.
if it makes noise full time, really any engine. its time to stop
not run it and fix it or the damage can cascade it to total engine destruction.
have an ASE mech, diagnose the noise and true source
we have tools to do that , and you dont.
we find the true source and evaluate that.
next time post how long the noise happens, hot and cold
and hot only start ups.?
most shop manuals have a chapter on noise.

here is typical translation of that.
