I called Canon when the same thing happened to me last week. A helpful associate told me there was a problem with the ink tank itself (not the printer). They shipped me a new yellow cartridge and everything seems to be working fine now.

when you give the print command the print dialog box appears select the properties and select one of the options print black and white or print in greyscale.

When trying to print in color, we also get the error message of "can not recognize the yellow ink tank". The cartridge is brand new, and we have tried to switch the colors around, trying to see if it is the cartridge or the slot where it sits. We can print in black and white, but no color, because of the error message. Is there such a thing as a "reset" button. No other colors give that message.
