depends on the operating system but normally if you can see the drive in pc manager (right click mycomputer icon, select manage, select disk management in windows) if the drive is listed then format it and allow automatic drive letter assingment
There are no problems hooking a external hard drive to any computer. If you mean take the hard drive out of the external case and putting it inside of your computer with a SATA cable, you can do that to. If your worried that they are both Western Digital, there are no conflicts with that either.
ok the external port is toast however............
1.) take the case apart
2.) you will most likely find a drive with sata interface inside
3.) google search the numbers you find on the hard disk to verify what type of drive
4.) go find a pc store to buy your type of interface to usb adapter
5.) hook it up hopefully you will be able to read the information off the drive.....
6.) transfer to a new drive !!!!!!
probably not, If it was me, I'd pull the hard drive out and hook it up externally with an adapter kit you can buy for about $20, that adapts your internal hdd to a USB external device---it's essentially just a controller card with cables and it's own power...you might ask someone who knows what to do...
I suspect the drive is toast. To test it, take the drive out of the external case and attach it to your computer as a slave drive. See if it shows up in My Computer and if you can read from it. If it works there, then you know that the logic board in the external case is bad. To slave it to your computer, the procedure depends on if it is an IDE drive or SATA drive because it is 1TB I am going to assume it is SATA. The easiest way to connect it is to unhook your CD/DVD drive and connect the cables to the hard drive. This assumes that is also a SATA drive. If not then you will have to get a SATA cable and connect the drive to an empty SATA port on the motherboard and hook up a power plug. Then you will have to go into the BIOS setup and turn on that SATA port. If the drive does not work as a slave, then it is probably dead.
From what you are describing you are missing the SATA controller
Please do the following
1) Go to www.devicedoctor.com and download and install application
2) Once installed load up and click on begin scan
3) Once it has scanned it will probably pick up missing SATA controller and give you the option to download
4) Download the SATA controller and install
5) Reboot PC and the SATA drive should be recognised
I also have the same problem. I bought a 500gb WD HDD and it worked great via USB for about 4 days, not the computer does not have it. i am running windows xp home. i can also hear the drive working and the blue light comes on, but it is delayed. When it was working correctly it came on instantly and the computer found it instantly.
