my cpu fan has become noisy intermittently though. asus probe shows temp of cpu normal (42-43 c max). changed bios settings for cpu fan from 1200 rpm to 800 rpm. error messages"cpu fan fail or speed too low" even after that.suddenly new error message "chip fan fail or speed low".after visually checking it i found out that the chip fan spins some times and doesn't other times. the message frequency has increased to almost everytime i boot nowadays. does the problem lie with cpu fan/chip fan /smps. the voltages are in normal range (as shown by the probe). the frequency of cpu fan from 3600-4400 rpm. the chip fan when detected runs at 4500 rpm -5500rpm. the noise of the cpu fan is usually accompanied by drop in chip fan rpm count.the count rises when the sound of the cpu fan dies down.
i have been advised to change the cpu fan. i want to make sure the problem lies with the cpu fan. plz suggest.
I had tons of problems with these Asus chip fans. I asked Asus to deliver 12 replacements (as I had a lot of pcs at that time with the same problem) It worked well, but placing a tiny heatsink well glued to the chip worked well also, as long as one does not want to overclock the thing. It's true that the temp raised a bit, but it remained pretty much in the tolerance area.

Yes. This sounds like a fan issue. The noise often comes from bearings failing within the fan. Also, a failing bearing can make things harder on the motor as it brings the fan up to speed. This is likely the reason that you see increased warnings during the fan speed check while booting because it comes to speed more slowly as bearing wear increases.
I give this a 90% chance that your CPU fan is causing the issue. Since a decent CPU fan will cost you ~$20 online, it's not much out of your pocket if you happen to uncover another culprit.

Oiling a fan is often a good temporary solution (heck, I still do it every once in a while), but once the bearing sleeve/balls start to wear, it's only a matter of time before the fan will not run - even with the oil. I think a change of fan will take care of all of your issues. Yes, CPU fans are available as standalone products and are often not too expensive. I'd be willing to point you in the right direction for a new CPU fan if you would like. Do you know what type of motherboard and CPU you are using?
OH! You are talking about the chipset fan! I apologize. I misunderstood.
Yes. There are options to replace the fan. They are in the cost range of $10-$25 with shipping. Take a look at these chipset coolers and read some of the comments. Many have installed new fans/heatsinks on your exact motherboard after having your same problem.

Keep in mind that if you install a fanless heatsink, you'll have to turn off the fan warning in your computer BIOS to get rid of that pesky warning.

thank you for the reply. my chip fan has started failing more often( it doesn't run). there is no noise from the cpu fan when the chipfan fails.i have started to wonder whether it is an loose connection or the chip fan which is the problem. will post the end result.

i think i jumped the gun while thinking the problem was solved. the chip fan still makes noise. do u think i need to change the fan? if yes, is it available over the top?

the problem isn't with the cpu fan. it is with the chip fan which comes with the motherboard. my mb is asus A8N-E, with an athlon processor 3000+ socket 939.

installed a heat sink. the motherboard temp now goes to to abt 48-50 celcius. is it alright? i have a feeling tht the temp has gone up by a couple of notches.
