Please indicate the Model of the router you are referring to.

If its Cisco, first do a no username xxx password nnn command on the existing configuration. Then on the global configuration mode insert a new command with the new username and password. See example below:

#configure terminal
(config)# no username old-username password old-password
(config)# username new-username privilege 15 password new-password
(config)# exit
# wr memory

Well, there are two possibilities: 1) You don't remember your password correctly 2) Some electronic failure messed up your password settings I recommend you to reset your router and reconfigure it, first turn off your router then reset your router by using a small pin or tooth pick and putting it in a small hole in the back of the router push just a little the reset button hiding in the hole for about 5 seconds and turn your router back on, the use default username and password to log into the router config, set up a new password and you're done. You might need to reset the password. In order to do this, follow these directions:

1. Console into the router, then power cycle it. As its rebooting hit the "break | pause" button on your keyboard, and you get to the rommon1> prompt.
2. Then type rommon1>confreg 2142 rommon2>reset
3. The router comes back on as if it were new---answer no to the first question, and sometimes it asks a second question (do you want to terminate autoinstall, or something...)---answer yes to the secondquestion if it asks. Then hit enter and you get router> in a few seconds.
   
4. Then router>en router#copy start run

create a new account:

1. router#conf t
2. router(config)#username bob priv 15 password bob
   

set register back:

1. router(config)#confreg 0x2102
2. router(config)#exit
3. router#wr
4. router#reboot
   

and that should let you login with bob/bob

the usename is admin and the password is password

Use the basic setup wizard in there to input your isp username and password
