My first concern would be regarding the actual working of the microphone on this unit. If the sound is so muted that the volume has to be at maximum then the microphone is probably the real culprit. Try using an external microphone and running a short test film.

Download the faulty video to your PC and see if it actually plays properly through Winamp or whatever you have to view video.

I have very low sound on my jvc gz-ms120au when playing back a recording

Hi,

I'm sorry to know that the videos are playing back with low volume. I'll be glad to assist you with this. Make sure that the Camcorder is used with a fully charged battery.
Increase the volume of the Camcorder using the Volume + - buttons and check if it increase or decrease. You can also try connecting the Camcorder to the Computer or to the TV and check if the transferred videos are playing with normal volume.
There are no settings to be done in the Camcorder to increase the recording volume level.
You can also backup the files, format the memory and capture a sample video recording and check if it helps.
This should resolve the issue.

Thanks for contacting FixYa.

No sound on playback

Try playing any other recorded disc in the Camcorder to check you're able to hear sound from it.

Next, press and hold the Reset button on the Camcorder for 30 seconds then turn it off then back ON.

Then, try playing the disc in the Camcorder.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When recording it shows that it is recording but we can't see anything. If we play back what we think we might have recorded we can only hear the sound but not see anything.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot this issue.

IMPORTANT: If additional model-specific instructions are needed to perform any of the steps below, refer to the operating instructions of the camcorder. The instruction manual is available in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony eSupport Web site.
  1. Ensure a fully-charged battery is inserted or connect the AC power adapter.
  2. Turn the camera on to the VTR or PLAYBACK mode.
  3. Insert a cassette tape with recorded video into the camcorder.
  4. Ensure the cassette tape is rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
  5. Begin playing the cassette tape.
  6. If your camcorder has an LCD screen, try adjusting the brightness or contrast.
  7. If there is still no picture on the LCD or viewfinder, reset the camcorder to factory specifications

Audio recording not very loud in play back

You may have a tape alignment issue, but, before you try anything rash, have the "control head assembly" cleaned. If you're not squeamish about opening this, you can then load a tape and look to see if the very top edge of the tape is "curled" over anywhere from .5" or greater. If this is the case, you'll need to fix what's causing that before you can do anything else....accordianman

No audio during playback

On my handycam you have to hit the Volume + button while playing back. Everytime you playback it starts volume at zero and you have to volume up to hear anytime you playback.

Audio volume

Unfortunately, connecting an external mic is not an option that was engineered into this model camcorder. Likewise the speaker and small amplifier for audio playback is simply what it is. You should be able to adequately hear normally recorded levels. If not, maybe there is a problem with the internal condensor mics or the playback speaker. If you are unable to obtain a resonable level using A/V cables to a TV, then something could be wrong. I have not seen problems with this model regarding sound, but anything can happen. Good luck, ms
