Hello, I see many questions about washing machines that do not spin. There can be many reasons and it is impossible to cover everything that can happen with every make and model. I will attempt to cover the basic things that can happen with the majority of the washing machines that have been sold.

First thing to check if your washer is not pumping or spinning is to see if the motor is running. If the motor is not running then check the pesky lid switch. When the lid gets slammed it hammers that switch and eventually will bend it or break it completely. Some washers will wash but not spin or pump, others will do nothing. This switch is located under the lid on the edge of the frame around the lid. Often there is a hole that a pin from the lid will go through and push on a lever that is the switch. Check that it is not simply bent, so that it does not trip the switch inside anymore. To change or check the switch the top will need to be raised or the front removed. Getting to it, is often harder then the replacement.

If the motor is running then you may have a broken pump belt or a broken or frozen pulley. If the belt is broken replace it. To check the pulley, remove the belt and then check to see if the pulley turns freely. If it does not, replace it.

If you are pumping, but not spinning, then you will need to again check the lid switch. Next on the list is the motor coupling. Many washers made are actually Whirlpool. These washers all use a coupler that is made of plastic and rubber and they will wear out after some time. This couples the motor to the transmission. If it breaks it will need to be replaced.

Other machines use belts. These belts can become stretched and then will not grip the pulleys to spin them at the proper speed. This also will often give that burning rubber smell. Be sure to replace these belts with washing machine belts as they are specially made for this purpose and are often not the same as regular automotive belts.

Drive motors are often a source of trouble. These motors often run in forward and reverse. They spin one way to agitate and the other to spin. Just because it works in one direction, does not mean that the other direction cannot be burnt out. This often happens and just because “it works” people think the motor is okay. The motor still needs to be replaced if either direction goes bad.

GE manufactured washers use a clutch system. This slowly bring the spin cycle up to speed as the water goes out of the washer. When this becomes worn the spin will not be as fast or may not spin at all. If your clutch needs to be replaced, you may want to hire that out as it is quite a project for most DIY’ers.

The final problem would be the bearing or basket drive. This gets worn or even will get tight so that the basket will not spin freely. If this goes bad you will usually have excessive noise when the washer spins. This too is a project that you may want help with.

As you can see there are many things that can go wrong to make problems with the spin cycle of a washer. You will have to do some detective work to figure out exactly what the problem is with your washing machine.

My Maytag Heavy duty 4 speed select, 10 cycle washing machine agitates while in spin cycle why?

If your Maytag washing machine is agitating during the spin cycle, it could be due to a few different issues. Here are some possible causes:
  1. Defective Transmission: The transmission in the washing machine is responsible for shifting the agitator and the drum between the spin and agitation cycles. If the transmission is defective, it may not be able to engage or disengage the agitator properly, causing it to spin during the spin cycle.
  2. Worn Drive Belt: The drive belt connects the motor to the transmission and helps to control the speed and direction of the agitator and drum. If the belt is worn or damaged, it may not be able to properly control the agitator, causing it to spin during the spin cycle.
  3. Malfunctioning Clutch: The clutch in the washing machine helps to regulate the spin and agitation cycles. If the clutch is not functioning properly, it may not be able to disengage the agitator during the spin cycle, causing it to spin along with the drum.
  4. Faulty Timer: The timer controls the various cycles and functions of the washing machine, including the spin and agitation cycles. If the timer is faulty, it may not be able to properly sequence the cycles, causing the agitator to spin during the spin cycle.
It's best to have a professional technician inspect and diagnose the issue to determine the exact cause and the necessary repairs.

I have a GE top loading washing machine. The agitator has stopped working and the drum no longer spins at the end of the cycle when the water drains. What can I do to fix it and get the agitator...

Hi,

When the agitator on your GE washing machine does not work correctly, the most likely cause is a worn drive bell. The drive bell sits on the agitator shaft inside the agitator. The shaft and the inside of the bell lock together using splines. When the splines inside the drive bell wear out, the agitator will not rotate correctly. To repair the agitator on the GE top loading washing machine, you will need to remove the agitator and the drive bell.

1. Unplug the GE washer from the wall outlet. Open the washer lid to access the agitator.
2. Grab the bottom of the agitator with both hands and pull the agitator out of the washing machine. If the agitator will not budge, rent agitator hooks to pry the agitator out. Agitator hooks are available at appliance repair stores. Set the agitator hooks under the agitator and push down on the handle to pull the agitator off the shaft.
3. Pry off the plug on the top of the drive bell on the agitator shaft with a small flathead screwdriver. Use a socket wrench to remove the hex head bolt at the top of the drive bell. Carefully pull the drive bell up off of the agitator shaft. This may take some force depending on how stripped the inside of the drive bell has become.
4. Inspect the inside of the drive bell. There are splines inside the drive bell that line up with the splines on the shaft. Most often the splines inside the drive bell have worn, causing the shaft to spin but not the drive bell. Also inspect the notch on the outside of the drive bell and the notch inside the bottom of the agitator. If either of these are worn, replace the drive bell and the agitator.
5. Take the drive bell to an appliance repair shop to purchase a new part. If you need to replace the agitator, take the old one with you as well. Compare the new parts to the old ones, making sure they are identical.
6. Position the new drive bell over the agitator shaft, lining up the splines on the shaft with the splines on the inside of the drive bell. Set the securing bolt back into the top of the drive bell and tighten the bolt down until it pushes the drive bell down until the bell bottoms out. Push the new plug on the top of the agitator bell with the palm off your hand until the plug locks into place.
7. Place the agitator over the drive bell and slowly rotate the agitator until the notch inside the agitator lines up with the notch on the outside of the drive bell. Tap the top of the agitator down with the palm of your hand until the notch on the agitator locks down over the notch on the drive bell. The agitator will not bottom out flush with the tub.
8. Close the washer lid and plug the washer power cord back into the wall socket.

The defective agitator is the cause of the drum not spinning. So get the agitator fixed and it should solve the spinning problem.

Good luck.

Agitator doesn't spin during wash cycle

If The washer won't agitate
Check to make sure no clothing got wrapped around the agitator. Check the lid switch, timer, and drive belt, other potential causes, such as a bad transmission or bad agitate/spin solenoid, but they are much more involved.
if the washer won't spin, the lid switch, timer, drive belt, transmission, or agitate/spin solenoid could be the cause here as well. Sometimes if the load is unbalanced or too heavy, the washer won't spin. Take some of the clothes out and try the spin cycle again with a lighter load.

Here are the steps to replace the agitator.
1: Take the fabric softener dispenser off and pry off the agitator lid.
2: Use a socket wrench with an extension bar to remove the stud and seal.
3: Remove the agitator top and bottom.
4: Check the agitator clutch assembly (located in the agitator top) for excessive wear.
5: To replace, just reverse the directions.

Cloth stuck under agitator in washing machine.

there is a bolt under the fabric softner dispenser (if you have one) if not, its a plastic cap on the top of your agitator which pops off by hand or a butter knife.. then there is a bolt under there that holds the unit down..grap the bottom of your agitator and loosen the bolt and remove it...then lift up carefully on the whole thing..careful not to loose the seal and bolt to put the agitator back in place....good luck..

Agitator free spins

Remove the top cap on the agitator and see if the bolt has come loose. If it is not there, the agitator will come loose from the gear case shaft and free spin.

Agitator spins in one direction

The purpose of the upper portion of the agitator is to push the clothes in a downward motion. As the agitator moves the dogs grab and on the backward srtroke the top portion rotates a quarter turn. In the spin mose the agitator only goes in one direction or your clothes would be torn to shreads. As the washer rotates back and forth, the dogs grab the inner walls of the upper agitator and that forces the clothes into a downward movement to the bottom of the tub. These dogs will wear out. To test whether or not these are bad just grab the agitator while in wash mode. The dogs should advance the top portion easily. If not then they are worn out. To replace them you must remove the agitator and sit it on the floor. Hold the base down with your feet and yank the top upwards. After seperating the 2 pieces you simply install the new dogs and line up the bottom with the top being careful not to break the little tabs on the bottom agitator that hold the top in place.

Agitator problem

Check and see if it spins freely in both directions. If it does, this means that your "dogs" are worn out in the top agitator. This is an easy fix. You just get the new ones (usually 10$ or less), pull the top cover off the agitator, then pull the center cap off inside of the agitator. Then you just remove the center bolt and pull the whole top agitator off. You will see the 4 plastic dogs right on the top of the agitator.
