I don't know what kind of needles to use. I have three older machines (117.552 158.18030 158.13201) all bought used. The manuals all say use Kenmore needles -not enough info. Is the 15x1 series of needle right for these machines made between 1940 and 1980?

You can use Kenmore, Singer, Klasse, Schmetz or Organ needles for home sewing machines - they are the same configuration.

The instruction manual should indicate how to insert the needle, either according to the flat side of the needle shaft or the groove down the front of the needle.

Needles for older machines may require a round shaft needle. Needles for industrial sewing machines have a round shaft.

Where are the oil ports on an old Kenmore 10 sewing machine #12511..thanks

If your older Kenmore is mechanical (not computerized), it probably can use a bit of oiling beyond what the manual recommends. Older machines frequently were pre-oiled at the factory, however, after many years, the oil tends to dry out and cause the mechanical parts to stick (the reason most older machines are frozen). Perhaps this link will be of help:

It was working now it seems to be frozen the needle part wont move

How to get it off bobbin wind

This is covered in the user manual. If you haven't got one search online for "user manual + your make & model". You should get several decent hits like. http://homeappliance.manualsonline.com/manuals/device/sewing_machine

What kind and size needle should I use in my Kenmore 158 14300 machine

Needles are sold at WalMart or other stores. The needle size is depending on what you are going to sew. The needles have the sizes marked on the package. The type of needle that your machine uses is a standard needle for sewing machines; no special type.

The hand wheel is very stiff and the foot control cannot electrically move the needle up and down either...just humms. The machine looks like it has had very little use. From the 70's and I just...

The top cover just pops open which is why there are no screws. Just push up from the front side and it should open. On older machines, this may take a little bit of force. :)
