The 2004 mercury mountaineer that i own is giving me trouble with the door ajar dash light staying on. All doors are shut properly but the interior lights stay on unless i turn them off manually and the alarm will not turn on as well.
Ends up being a broken wire(ground) in the rubber boot between door and frame. I carefullly removed door panel, pinched the ends of the boot and slid it back into door. And there it was...a broken black wire. Spliced in a new piece of wire, reassembled everything else. Everything works like it should. It's really not that hard just take your time. Also before I started I disconnected the battery as a precaution. Goodluck.
We bought a 2004 in Austin. It has been a remarkable vehicle. Im sure the next baby will be what ever u need in America Suv. Gas is decent , comfort , and performance. Im not a look person. But this light problem has been going on four a month . Now Thanks for the help I bought a new battery. Cause the battery was being drained. With a 30 minute light on dujring a wedding last month. We had took 15 min to charge battery then we got it crunkkkkkk. Peace

Could be a sticking latch, a short in one of the door latches, a problem with the dome light circuit itself, or a short in one of the wires. Look under the door seals and see if any wires have been caught or screwed through. Put some lubricant on the door latches. Last resort, start taking the doors apart 1 by 1 and disconnecting the door triggers in the latches. When you get the right door disconnecting it will make the other doors work right. Then you can replace only that 1 door latch. Otherwise you can just start replacing door latches till you hit the right one. If its in the dome light circuit there is a Black/lt blue wire in the driver kick panel in a harness to the rear. This wire shows + when the dome light is on. You might have some luck traceing this wire.

Yes, all it took was 30 seconds first WD40 to lubricate the sticking latch then open / close couple times problem solve. Good luck

I am having a similar problem in my '03. Seems like people are suggesting WD-40 in the latches to loosen up any sticking.
Same problem here - 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. Also when I have my interior lights manually turned off - when I push the rear defrost, my door ajar alarm goes off. HELP!

I have a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer, seems like it slowly started happening, out of nowhere the door ajar light would come on, then eventually the dome lights would stay on when I would leave the car and I'd have to jump it. Now I manually turn the lights off with the interior switch every time I leave the car. Now when I hit the rear defrost the door ajar light comes on too.
Same Problem 2003 explorer door ajar light is off. I have to manually turn the interior lights off (Panel). Turn the rear defrost on and the door ajar light comes on. I have tried spraying the door latches and it did fix the door ajar light from coming on but the interier light will stay on unless the manual panel switch is tured off.
Same problem on my 2004 Mountaineer. Tried WD-40 on the latches, and that didn't work.
Have the same on my 2003 Mountaineer. Rear defrost turns on door ajar. Have to manually turn off dimmer or dome lights stays on-also auto lock says door is open(honk-honk).
I have the same problem with my 2004 Mountaineer. If I turn on the interior lights the door ajar comes on and if I turn off the interior lights by using the panel I can lock my doors properly. I have lubricated the latches on the door and is still experincing this problem.
