Hi therei have a phillips 42 inch plasma flat tv model 42PF 5320/79 . It keeps turning off if i turn it off at the power on the wall and then turn it back on this gets the tv going again. But then it will only go for a while and then turn off. The green led light stays on but it is not as bright when it is off.

I don't believe this has anything to do with where you have the set plugged into, what most likely is happening is when you shut power off to the set at the wall it shuts down the power supply in the TV and resets itself verses just turning the set off at the TV or remote still leaves the power supply in standby mode. This could be a main board or power board issue, you would need to pull the back off and get some voltage measurements to try to diagnose it

This is because the power switch operated the socket that your TV is plugged into. Unplug it and plug it in another socket that is not operated by a switch. Appliances should not be plugged into a socket operated by a switch because of the inconsistency of power to the socket. Lights are about the only thing that should be plugged in.

SOURCE: 42" philips plasma

when a television turns off by itself and flashes as you say, it indicates that there is a problem inside the tv. If you keep trying to turn it on you may do more damage. It could be something as simple as a faulty fuse inside. If you have no expierience with electrics I suggest you get it checked out by a professional. I had a similar problem with another tele model and it was the fuse in the back of the tele that needed changing. I did try to this on my own but unfortunatley didn't have the right fuse so i took it to a repair shop and he done it really quickly.

The problem is in the standby power supply. the standby power supply generates the 9 volts and the 5 volts requird by the tv. If you measure the 9 volts source, with only the red light on, the correct voltage is 9 volts. However if the 9 volt measures 6.5 to 7 volts it is too low and the startup relays cannot operate. My set is a model 42FR9954/17S. In this set if capicator, 2603, is heated the voltage climbs to 9 volts and the relays work. If cold air is applied to the capicator the relays fail to operate. Replace capacitor 2503 and the problen is fixed. This capicator is: 47 Ufd, rated @ 450 volts, and is 20%.

The only thing I can suggest outside of taking the television to get repaired is a hail-mary firmware update. To be honest, the firmware update process is fairly complicated and lengthy. You can download the firmware and find instructions for it here.

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?ctn=42PF9630A/37&scy=US&slg=AEN

Look on the right hand side for firmware information.

This TV is likely outside of its 1 year manufacturer's warranty so you would have to pay any and all repairs. Before deciding to do a repair you might try calling Philips. For a while they were offering a service to customers like yourself with out of warranty units. They would offer to sell you a more up to date model at a discount. I'm not sure they still do this but its worth a shot.

Hope that helps!

Pillips Plasma - Screen is not centered.

Hi jasonlambert,

You can use the remote control to center the picture on screen. Press to the right of the round pad around the OK button until your image is centered. (I had the same problem once)
