  1. In Control Panel, click Printers.
  2. Right-click the bidirectional printer, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Ports tab, click Enable bidirectional support, and then click OK.

Also if parallel port, this is also set in BIOS, under LPT port settings.

Printer is downloaded trying to run test page but must enable bidirectional communication

You need to access the BIOS to enable this.
Usually done by pressing the Del button when first powering on.
Depending on brand, yours may be different. Possibly F2
May flash on screen for 2 seconds (which button) when you power on [e.g. F2 for BIOS F10 for Boot Options]
Once you get in to BIOS look for the LPT port settings and enable Bidirectional.

Keeps telling me to enable bidirectional communication

Hi:

When you first loaded the print driver there should have been a box to check to enable bidirectional communication. Most Lexmark printers require this to work properly

How to turn off network notices on the photosmart c309. They pop up on every computer the network printer is installed on.

Turn off bidirectional support. This should be in the printer properties under the ports tab. Uncheck the "Enable bidirectional support". If the printer is through a print server, you'll probably need to change this setting on there, otherwise if it is installed on each computer as a direct IP print to the printer, you'll need to change it on each computer.
