Hi, when I turn on the tv, only the bottom half comes up. It is cut off with red, yellow, and blue lines directly in the middle. The top half is just black....
My Toshiba 50H72 is six years old. It has the same problem, just has bottom half picture. Some time it changed into whole screen when I turn on the TV for half to one hour. Want to know if it could be fixed.

ya mine did something close to the same. at the moment i covered the blue canon inside the tv now the picture isnt 2 of eveything. the tv comes apart easy from the front good luck mike
Odds are real good that the cooling fluid in the blue picture tube assembly has become contaminated. Only solution is to pull blue crt and dump out old fluid and clean and reinstall new fluid. Once done a fair amount of re-alignment is required. This is not a job for a do-it-yourselfer. Most tv shops would charge in the area of $250 to $300 for this repair.
Can be 1 of 2 things. 1st the red tube just needs the voltage to it turned down. In the front of TV (you have to remove the lower front half of TV to access it) is a plastic square with 6 knobs. The from left to right top knobs control focus for blue, green red. The bottom knobs control voltage to each tube in same order (so lower right knob for red) turn SLOWLY to left to reduce voltage until excessive red and lines go away. If you over turn left or right set will turn off. If that does not fix it or if lines reappear then option 2 is that red picture tube is failing outright and needs replacement.
I got this Sony KP-57WS500 57 in TV for FREE from a guy posting it on craigslist because he saw "BLUE SWIRL LINES" also knows as "Retrace Line" on the screen and he went to several repair people and got high repair costs so he was giving it away for free, but i found a guide that tells you how to adjust the tv to make the blue or green or red lines go away, aparantly the line show up because the voltage on the color ray gun tubes that get out of adjustment. Here is the Link to the REPAIR GUIDE. http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html
