Hi guest, you cannot charge the laptop thru usb, it will be solely on the AC adaptor port. USB's are functioned for multi-media devices such as cameras, MP3 players, etc..

but does it still work on the desk top.
if yes, then you have lap top issues, ONLY.
easy ,huh?

try all lap top USB ports no ext. hubs allowed.
what is wrong in the LAP top OS, unstated)

are you using the correct external power adaptor for both Desk and lap top usage,
have you tried a diff. usb cable.
Laptops can not power the hdd via the USB at all, and in fact
should be avoided at all times. no matter.
the laptop can be infected.
the laptop might have USB issues, with drivers.
do a USB driver update. (no 0S stated)
does the HDD show up in Disk manager, as DISK2
can you set the drive letter?
can you set the volume label on this disk via DM?
if yes, you then can read and write the drive.
as stated on all pages for USB
disconnect all other USB devices, and now try this HDD.
do a full virus scan, and malware scan
do wInDoZ update.
I think i hit them all.

Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. Try using a PCI wi-fi card instead of a USB wi-fi so you can use your USB ports.

Or you may want to check your computer configuration settings and enable all USB ports in your system.

The flash drive purchased doesnot work when pjugged into the usb port on my desk top but it work on my lap top? How do I get it to work on my desk top

Hello claponte

FIRST, THE HARDWARE SIDE:
If you just purchased your flash drive, then it is using the USB 2.0 (high speed) standard. Prior to that were USB version 1.1 and, before that, USB 1.0 standards.

USB 2.0 devices will still work when plugged into USB 1.1 ports - just at a reduced speed)

However, computers w/ USB 1.0 ports cannot properly detect USB 2.0 devices. On those computers, you'd need to install a USB 2.0 expansion card in order to add USB 2.0 functionality to the computer.

SECOND, THE SOFTWARE (DRIVERS) SIDE:
On the software side, USB devices are "plug-and-play" on Windows XP & Vista systems. This means they do not require special drivers or installation for them to work properly. The drivers needed for them to operate are already built into the operating system.

However on operating systems prior to Windows XP (Windows ME, Windows 98SE, Windows 98...) drivers are needed for USB devices to be detected properly.

These are two possible reasons why your flash drives don't work on your desktop computer.
(01) The computer is an older one using USB 1.0 technology
(02) The operating system is pre-Windows XP

Another possibility is (if your computer USB ports are at least 1.1 standard and your operating system is at least Windows XP) there is an issue w/ the USB ports on your desktop computer. This could be a hardware or a software issue still.

Please, let us know if that's the case and we'll help you to trouble-shoot the issue.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have any further questions.

Thank you
BJ
