I have a TroyBilt model TB25CS weed eater that was running perfectly until a couple of weeks ago. I believe it has a ZAMA carburetor.
It starts but when I just touch the throttle, the engine runs away and goes to full speed and then dies (even when I let the throttle go).
I notice the engine dies when the choke opens. If i hold the choke close, i can keep it running and give it throttle. I also cannot restart the weed eater when it is warmed up with the choke open ( I used to be able to start it warm without having to close choke.)
I have turned the idle screw in and out, but it doesn't do anything. The 2 mixture screws have plastic ''cams'' on them which limit adjustment (I have not touched the mixture screws.)
I have installed a new spark plug, air filter, and cleaned the arrestor.
I am really confused on what is happening. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The Zama carburetor remains sensitive to ethanol additives in gasoline.Assuming there are no fuel line leaks, you could buy a rebuilding kit online at e replacement.com. Rebuilding instructions often appear om youtube. Its simple. The rebuilding works about 40% of the time.A new carb is around $40 online.
If it runs with the choke closed then it's not getting enough gas. Check the gas filter on the end of the gas line in the gas tank. Remove the gas cap and using a piece of wire with a hook on the end, reach in the tank and pull the gas line out through the opening. Check the filter on the end of it. You could also have a burst-ed diaphragm in the carburetor. This sucks the gas from the tank to the carb. If that's the case a new weed eater may be in order unless you can find someone with the parts to repair it. Also check the gas lines for leaks or breaks, 2 of them.
