Kodak EasyShare M853 Digital Camera lens error 122,1,0,0

Hi there,

We recently purchased one of these cameras and after only a short time we're having a major problem with it. The inner lens has only partly retracted and is stuck and won't fully retract. The camera is not not useable because of this problem...keeps telling me there is a "lens error 122,1,0,0".

Through my own research I have found out this is a common fault with this model and would like to know what options Kodak offer with regards to fixing or replacing the camera?

Kind Regards

Margaret :)

My camera is only a couple of months old and the lens will not retract at all and it keeps giving me the same error message (lens error 122,1,0,0). I tried to take the battery out and put it back in and it will not work. I tired to turn it on, it gives me the error message and shuts down.

It actually broke the inside of the camera while it was trying to retract...I was unable to take pictures for the rest of my vacation. I DO have the receipt and I do plan on taking it back and having it replaced...

help me i got a kodak easyshare m753 how do i fix lens error 122,1,0,0?

  • kpayne626 Feb 20, 2009

I pruchased the m853 and the lens won't retract. As soon as I turn it on, it reads "lens error" and then shuts off.

  • Anonymous Feb 20, 2009

I got the Kodak Easyshare M853 not too long ago. This is the first problem I have had with it. When I went to turn on my camera the lens didn not open, than it shut off.

After awhile of opening and shuting it, the camera finnaly would do it on its own ( like it is suppose to ).

The only problem now is that when the camera turns on it says:

    Camera Lens error 122,1,0,0

I don not know what to do, I really like this camera, and I dont want to pay to get it fixed.

    Can anyone help me?

  • Anonymous Feb 21, 2009

I have the same problem. When my camera goes on the lens error shows up. People are saying maybe you dropped it or something like that, but this camera was the best camera I have gotten so I took care of it very well. It was working one day than broke another. Also when I turn it on and off it makes a clicking sound like the gears keep pulling the lens back when they are already back.

Can someone tell me what went wrong please?

When I recieved this error message after dropping my camera, I took a thin bladed knife and gently went around the outer and inner lense until it caught. Normally the lense will stick because it is bent from the drop. If you are gentle you can bend it back without damaging the screen.

ATTENTION:::
TO EVERYONE WHO POSTED THE COMMENTS ABOUT HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM I WANNA SAY THANKS. ALL I HAD TO DO WAS POP THE LENS OUT MYSELF AND THE CAMERA IMMEDIATELY WENT BACK TO NORMAL. AND NO THIS ISNT A PROBLEM WITH THESE MODELS....ITS JUS THAT WHEN THE CAMERA'S BATTERY DIES IT AUTOMATICALLY TURNS OFF AND IF U LET YOUR BATTERY GET REALLY LOW IT DOESNT HAVE ENOUGH ENERGY TO FULLY RETRACT THE LENS....WHICH IN RETURNS CAUSES THE LENS TO GET STUCK..
IN THE FUTURE JUS TURN YOUR CAMERA OFF AS SOON AS THE BATTERY LIGHT BLINKS

My daughter's phone got slept on. Lens was not square and would not retract. After reading all the stories of woe I suspected it was alost cause. I pushed on the bigger piece of the lens till it clicked and it immediately closed up and worked no problem. If you still have warrantee let Kodak look after it, if not then brute force did work. Just push up in the direction it looks like it needs to go.

After reading suggestions on here I decided to VERY gently take a thin knife blade and just slid it into the space between the camera body and lens to see if maybe if was out of alignment (I never pried or used any force tho). Just as others have experienced, as soon as I did that the lens righted itself and is totally fine now. It's as if the dropping of the camera jarred it out of lens alignment. Glad I tried this as I thought the camera was totally broken (and in my opinion would not have een worth the repair cost). Gotta love the internet!

Thanks all. My inner lens was bent (lopsided). I used a flathead screwdriver to pry it in the other direction and it worked. The camera was off. When I turned it on it sucked back into the camera. Yay. I was going to take it in, but read these posts and kept trying and trying. Saved $70.

Hello Everyone -

After reading the posts here I decided I have nothing to lose. Trying to pry it open was unsuccessful for me as other posts suguest. So I dropped my phone purposely on the floor a few times and like magic the lens unjammed. My floor is vinyl tile. It took a few drops from about a foot or less from the floor.

I have always enjoyed Kodak products, but this is my last time buying any Kodak product. Not worth the frustration especially when there are so many other choices.

Thanks for the tips and postings!!

I suggest to you all not to fiddle around with it yourself as you may cause more damage to your cameras, if you have a local camera or electronics shop see if they can ship your item to the manufacturer for repair or repair it themselves if they are certified to do so, any way you choose to do it will cost if not under warranty.

I have repaired for years ago a Samsung videocam that has also a problem with the auto diaphragm there are little motors used on ffc cable in a time of 3 years its possible by store the cam on sunny places or where dust or moisture is that a motor is not be timed for making zoom or open diaphragm correction , because every adjustment is timed controlled over a processor if a batterie goes down it should also give a problem but its extremely useful to micro motors and micro switch preventive maintenance with a little contact spray. What mechanism is not running smoothly drawn extreme power

Fixed it! I was getting a lens error 122,1,0,0 where the lens was stuck in the out position and the inner lens area was crooked - mostly likely because I tried to turn it on with a low battery and it died before the lens could finish extracting. Just took a piece of hard, thin plastic cut from some packaging, slid it between the gap of the inner lens part and moved it around the circle until the lens straighten out.

After looking at the solutions here, I took a steak knife, placed the tip down in the well between the outer and inner lens where the space was greatest and - slowly and carefully - moved the knife around to the side where the inner lens had retracreted less. It worked like a charm! Thanks so much.

I'm gonna try this solution on my M853 - which I HATE - and hope it will. However if it doesn't, I'm gonna get a Cannon SureShot. Several friends have Cannons and they live theirs.

I had the same problem with mine last night. Everyone, check to see if the lens is slightly crooked.. You should notice if you look closely. If it is, then try to pop it out.. It's simple. You don't need to take it to a repairman or anything.. Just a waste of money. Just do it yourself.

Kodak wont fix it for you, I took mine into wal-mart and said that they would not warrenty it. They will send it in for you, using your Kodak Easyshare software on your computer, it will ask for the numbers on your reciepts and whatnot.
But if you look around and ask.. people will tell you where it can be fixed.
The same thing happend to my camera, and someone reffered me to a man who works at home. He fixed it for 40$. So it can be fixed, you just have to find someone to do it.
best of luck!

I have the same problem as everybody else. I got the Kodak M853. If you have warranty theyll replace you a new one but you gotta have proof of purchase. If you don't its $60 to repair. But to make sure, contact the Kodak specialist.

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Try helping the camera to retract using your fingers while you turn camera off, try also helping lens to full extent if they don't.if you do not succeed in this simple way the camera lens must be taken apart and reassembled at a repair shop.
