Three way switch does not work properly

dont you have a three position pull switch on the unit like a three-way light bulb or if you have a remote controlled fan it should have it on the remote control

The reason the fan and light are running together is because the are both running on one power wire. The three wires you have in the wall are probably white black and bare copper. You need to run a four wire cable which has a white red black and bare copper in order for you to separate the light and fan and for the circuit to run properly. A DIY electrical book from lowes or the home depot would help you alot with your situation.

Are you saying you have a dimmer for the fan light and it does not work, or you do not know if the fan came with a dimmer switch?
Most of these fans have two switches; one is for the fan speed(usually three speed) and the other is for the lights(on -off). Adding a Remote control , which is optional for this unit , will allow for remote speed control(variable or three speed), and light dimmer control. The remote controls can be purchased in your local Home Depot or Lowes store. Hope this helps....

Trip the breaker and verify that the fan/light will not operate. If tripping the breaker kills the circuit and flipping the wall switch would not, the switch is probably bypassed. Place the wall switch to "off" with the breaker tripped to the "off" position as well. Gain access to your wiring connections at the fan. Look for a single (black) wire that is not connected. This should be your hot return from the wall switch Make your fan/light connections to this wire. (Are you sure that the ground wire that you connected is a ground? If it is, it should be bare copper with no insulation). Your white (neutral) connection to the three white wires should be fine. If you don't find a single wire in the ceiling box, call on an electrician. Regards --WoobieDog--

It sounds like the direction switch has a broken connection on the "reverse" side.  Should be an easy fix (but you might need a soldering iron).

your remote modual should have two or three wires coming from the unit on one side to go to the fixture and three on the other to hook it to power , the three should be to connect to the black (power), the white (Neutral) and green (ground), now the unit has power. The two or three coming from the other side should be a white and two other colors or two the same , black, red, or blue, The white connects to the fan white and the other two go to, one the fan and two the light. Possibly, your switch has a short in it.Outside of that, it may be a broken wire somewhere. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Turned out that it was the dimmer switch that had shorted out.

My hubby figured it out, and replaced it.

in your ceiling box should be three wires. a red goes to the three way switches, a black goes to the hot and the white is the neutral. the fan wires are black, blue and white. since you have a remote, connect the [fan] blue & black together with the [line] black. connect all white wires together. the remote will now ramp up your lights from off to full on and the fan remote will let you choose lo med high and off. just tape up the red wire in the box.

Sounds like the remote receiver units (located where the mains connect to the fans) took a surge and have failed.
