SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

you have to put a bit of tape around the bit were the little tab use to be.. This works epically if you have lost the tab from the card.

Take the card out. On the left side of the card is a tiny white switch. Reverse the position.

SOURCE: Memory card locked

There is a tiny button on the side of the card - so small you can hardly see it. Just slide it up and voila All is solved.

It is frustrating as there is nothing in the manual bout this and the onl line assistance wants to charge for 20 seconds advice Mine is free dorothy

SOURCE: Card Locked

First I know you've said you've checked the card's slide switch, but just want to restate this first for others with the same problem who may not know of this switch.

Check to make sure that you didn't accidentally place the tiny locking slide switch on the side of your SD card in the "locked" downward position. The correct "unlocked" position should be slid up toward the direction of the connectors.

If you've tried this, and it's still showing locked, it's likely that the locking switch inside the camera's card slot is stuck. If you look inside the slot on the side of the slot where the SD card slide switch would be, you'll see a glint of gold color on the side. This is the camera's lock/unlock switch. The other glint's of gold that you may see at the far end of the slot are the reader's connectors (ignore those).

Somehow, the locking switch is making contact and has become stuck in the locked position. With a plastic toothpick, or other skinny NON-METALLIC item, tap against this switch to see if you can jar open the contact to its normal unlocked position. Also try blowing compressed air at it, as some gunk may have worked its way in there, jamming it closed. Occasionally, reinsert the SD card to see if the issue has been corrected.

If repeated tries fail, it may be time to consider opening the camera to force open this switch (not recommended unless you have some familiarity with electronics). In this case please see the following (xscrewdriver, hope you don't mind me referencing your blog):

How do u fix the camera that keeps saying locked card and its not the memory card

Not sure why you are saying it's not the memory card or is it because you are working on the camera internal memory? If so the camera internal memory still needs to be formatted or initialized to properly work with the camera. I'm going to include two diagrams on a memory card that your camera will use first is the Card Lock. This is an actual lock on the side of the memory card and if in the incorrect orientation will prevent formatting all new card must be formatted to the camera they are being used in. You can't format the card in the computer and expect it to work in the camera it won't happen. You can't format the card in one camera and place it in another even the same make and model and expect to work.
Here is the first picture/diagram of the card lock

The second diagram is right out of your owners manual showing how to format/initialize your memory card

Keeps saying card is locked

Hello

OK, if your camera keeps saying that the card is locked, you need to take your memory card from the camera.
The card should look something like this. Have a look at the lever on the card, which will lock or unlock the memory card for use.

Now, just slide the switch to the other end to unock your card.

Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Kind regards

"Card Locked"

Hi!
There's a small switch on the memory card reader inside the camera which detects that the card is locked. Most likely this switch is broken. You can try to point it with needle or something but I'm afraid you will have to give it away for a repair to a local repair shop or Canon service center.
