Karcher pressure washer

I have a Karcher K 3.91m pressure washer, it started to shut off a couple times when I last used it, I would turn the switch back to off, then on and it worked. (This model does not have the GFCI)...I let my neighbour use it, he said he turned it on and after 15 minutes it turned off, and when he turned it back on it was dead. I tried it the next day and nothing. I was told by a local company that it may be ? the electronic capaitor, this company has a shop rate minimum of 1 hour (@$90) plus parts....I can buy a refurb for $100, so before I buy the capacitor for $20, and install it myself, I was wondering if anyone has had this issue, and if so what was your fix.....thanks Darren

What was my fix? I simply bought another pressure washer, lol. Seriously, my previous pressure washer had only 1800 psi and it was cheaper to buy another one in front of repairing of my old pressure washer. By the way, I was shocked by the variety of pressure washers on the market, however, thank heaven I found an article with examples of the best pressure washer for homes, and this article guided me what pressure washer to chose. So, with the help of that article I bought Generac 6602 OneWash gas-fuel washer with 3100 psi and I am pleased enough, so, I guess, it would be profitable for you to proceed in the same way...

SOURCE: No pressure in the pressure washer

Leaving the hose on shouldn't cause a problem so don't panic. It sounds like you could just have a dirty nozzle. Try sticking a pin or something in the end of the nozzle (machine not running) and giving it a clear out. also if it is a two peice gun, split it and tap the squirting part on something clean like a workbench to clear any debris that might have got in there.

SOURCE: Electric Karcher pressure washer surging when turned on

Dear firenutt681,
One simple thing you can do, is to check for leaks. Check if hose at machine is leaking. Check gun if it is leaking. You can also check if water still comes out of lance nozzel. These leaks however so small, will cause the machine to surge.
Another reason is due to a faulty SPILL VALVE. This spill valve( often called CONTROL VALVE) will contract when the gun is closed. When it contracts under the enclosed pressure it will switch off the machine by means of a Micro Switch. Now if this Spill valve is faulty it will loose its compression under pressure and puts on the micro switch again. This can be seen once in a while or more frequent, as in your case. I sometimes do service Spill Valves, but mostly I replace them with a new one. I do not know the model number of your machine, but normally you have to open the cover and you should spot the spill valve on the head. Most probably you see a thick wire or a cap containing the micro swith. If you find the micro switch, you have found the spill valve. Sometimes it is a bit hard to pull out the spill valve. Myself, in various Karcher models I remove the spill valve by trying to feed water and put on a bit the machine. In this way the spill valve will be spitted out.
Another reason which makes your machine surge, is leakage from from the detergent inlet.
If you do not see no leakages at all....then for sure it is the SPILL VALVE.
If you cannot do this job yourself or you do not find spare parts...you can continue using the machine as it is...but before closing the gun...switch off the electricity. I only recommend this in an emergency. You do this so that you do not leave the machine surging. This surge will for sure damage the electric motor and the capacitor (assuming it is single phase).
Regards,
Fulltech.

What is this problem - Karcher 3.86 electric pressure washer: humming noise, plug gets very hot, then unit shuts down?

Your pressure washer is either not fitted with a run/stop device in which case like mine you have to switch off within a few seconds of closing the trigger. Check your model features?
The humming noise is the motor stalled out against the pump because there is nowhere for the water to go. The shutoff is caused by the safety overload switching off after overheat.
Or, it has a pressure operated run/stop which is not working. Because water and electricity don't mix, I would suggest getting more specific help. You can download Karcher manuals /spares lists online from Karcher specialists but remember electricity is the silent killer.

I have a Karcher 3.49M purchased 8/2/09. Using the washer I inadvertently turned on after changing hoses, but forgot to turn water back on; this activation lasted only a couple of minutes before I realized...

Normally when you dry run a machine you damage the pump so it would probably need changing. The motor might be Ok but for you to fix it you will need to take it to a Karcher dealer/service center.

From experiance it sometimes can be more cost efficient to purchase a new Karcher machine and get the 12 month warranty than spending money on an older machine.

Karcher K2.36 Pressure Washer I've just fired up my Karcher for the first time since last year and the motor started running fine, I then switched on the tap to allow the water through and the motor cut...

The water must be switched on, and seen to be running freely from the nozzle for a few seconds before switching on the power - suggest you check the fuse in the plug, and then try the above.

Karcher K2.36 motor cut out and won't restart

Yes, the water should be turned on first but if it only ran for a minute or two it should be OK. Most late model pressure washers have an automatic shutoff when the trigger on the wand is released. Turn on the water and then the machine and then squeeze the trigger on the handle of the wand and the motor should start as soon as the air is cleared from the line by the flowing water (about 10 seconds). If the unit was put away wet last season you may need to clean the nozzle with a piece of wire too.

Karcher pressure washer trigger problem

The wands that it will not run with would most likley have a little dirt in the tip of the nozzle. This would not allow the water to flow through in turn activating the pressure switch and shutting the machine down

These units have pressure valves that automatically turn off the pump once the pressure is high enough. The pressure switches do fail and sometimes stick and act as you've described.
