The rubber keys are moulded as protrusions from a rubberised membrane which is slightly permeable to sweat and grease. Over time this builds up as a corrosive yellow greasy deposit on the reverse side of the membrane which prevents keys from making good contact with the circuit board behind. The process occurs far more quickly if you regularly operate the remote with greasy hands such as is the case if you regularly eat in front of the tv, or if you (or any other user) frequently use hand moisturiser.
There are only two repair options:-
1. Take apart the remote and thoroughly degrease it. The membrane itself can be washed in soapy water but dry it thoroughly before refitting. At best this is only ever a temporary fix.
2. The official fix (and best) is to replace the remote.
