Ed, as long as the thermocouple is adjusted properly, a universal part will work just fine. The top 3/16" of the thermocouple should be in the flame,and make sure that the tip does not stick thru the pilot.
Now, for the part that you don't want to hear;
If the unit keeps failing and you keep putting on thermocouples, there is a good chance that the gas valve is bad.
The flame heating the thermocouple creates a milivolt current, which is use to create a magnetic pull to hold open the pilot port on the valve, the windings can and will start getting weak with age. Never try to open a gas valve to work on it, even the pros never take that kind of liability. You will probably have to repace it, if the pilot and the thermocouple is setup properly, and it's still messing up.
