Ed, as long as the thermocouple is adjusted properly, a universal part will work just fine. The top 3/16" of the thermocouple should be in the flame, and make sure that the tip does not stick thru the pilot.
Now, for the part that you don't want to hear;
If the unit keeps failing and you keep putting on thermocouples, there is a good chance that the gas valve is bad.
The flame heating the thermocouple creates a milivolt current, which is use to create a magnetic pull to hold open the pilot port on the valve, the windings can and will start getting weak with age. Never try to open a gas valve to work on it, even the pros never take that kind of liability. You will probably have to repace it, if the pilot and the thermocouple is setup properly, and it's still messing up.
If this has been helpful, please rate me, and just reply back, if I can help you in any way.
Sincerely,
Paul Gibson

Does pilot need to be relit every time I turn off glo warm gas heater?

No-- it should normally keep the pilot burning...
How about we learn a few things together, and see what to do next:
1.) Does it have a little device right next to (in the path of..) the Pilot flame, that is supposed to stay HOT (and thus be safe for the Pilot gas valve to stay open/'on')-- This is called a Thermo-couple.-- (Actually a very low voltage generator, that tells the gas valve it is safe to let gas flow.)
Here is a link to a Thermo couple for GloWarm heaters-- not sure if this is your exact model or not -- but it may help you know what I am talking about?)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/140878605243?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

2.) How old is the Thermo-couple?-- and is it dirty from soot build up?-- It can be polished-- that might help.
3.) THe Pilot flame needs to be just slightly in the path of the flame, so that it generates sufficient electrical power to keep the gas vale 'on'.

Any questions from the points listed above?
Hope this helps-- Mack B.

How do I clean the thermo coupler tube?

Most of the time if you are having a problem with keeping the pilot lite and you supect the thermocouple. Just replace it, cleaning it won't help unless its the pilot not burning right then taking a wire brush to it helps and blowing it with an air compressor. You can also use a wire brush on the thermocouple if it has a lot of deposit on it. If the pilot orfice is blocked then blowning it out with air or opening it up with a broach needle. Good Luck

When I push my red button in it shut off the fuel and wont stay going

this is caused by a bad thermo coupling. just to make sure that it is in fact bad - hold down the button for about 20 seconds while the heater is going and if after that amount of time the unit still shuts down when you release the fuel button - then replace the thermo coupling.

Pilot light wont stay onfor outside pool heater. Gas co made a service call & relit the pilot light it went out again 4 days later.

There is a thermo couple that keeps the gas on. The pilot light bracket has a small screen where the gas comes through that can get clogged and cause the pilot light to burn away from the thermo couple which would cause it to think the flame has went out and shut the gas off. Or the thermo couple has went bad itself. If you try cleaning the screen use canned air and gently blow it through the orfice once you have taken it off. If you don't know what a thermo couple is or looks like here's a picture of a generic one that will give you an idea. Usually there's a bracket that holds this in place. f1b528a.jpg
