My DC25 Animal is making a howling, whistling noise. Primarily when turning off (winding down to shut off)

My "howling" disappeared completely when I replaced both air filters with new ones; exact replacements are available on Amazon.

If it started after you cleaned the filters, it is because when you smack the filter that is in the ball like they tell you to, it pushes the gasket in so air can sneak past it. take it back out and pull the rubber gasket away from the filter so there is about 1/16-1/8" away all the way around, then put it back in. it will seal it and stop.

The noise is caused by the air blowing out of the motor leaking out between the rubber gasket of the filter and the motor housing. Smearing a very thin film of silicone grease on the rubber gasket should stop the noise completely.

Another way of stopping the noise is to take a length of nylon cord or string about 16 inches (40cms) long and 1/8 to 3/16 inch (3 to 4mm) in diameter and insert it in the 'v' on the inner surface of the black rubber seal on the filter (it's hard to describe, but when holding the filter, it's easy to see where it goes). It only takes a minute and requires no tools, just your fingers. Fitting this cord raises the outer part of the seal just a bit to form a better air seal and prevent air being sucked in past the seal - it's this that causes the whining noise. This works well for me in my Dyson and is much better than the lubrication fix I posted above which solved the problem only for a couple of weeks.

I've retrospectively added a photo of the filter with the last 3 inches of the nylon cord still to be fed into the seal.. Hope this helps to visualise things.

The dc25 model tends to allow air to bypass the HEPA filter. The air makes a whistling sound. Remove the filter cover and try moving the filter around a little a see if it changes the sound. Sometimes it can be adjusted to stop the noise.

Do not attempt to seal these filters they need to be changed air cannot pass thru anymore and is pushing out thru the seals on the side. Filters need to have air go thru them to filter. If you leave them the motor will run hot and burn out Dyson DC25 Post Filter oem 916188 05 envirocare f978

It is the filter in the ball, the nylon mesh vibrates as the suction decreases. The mesh should be stuck to the inner filter but does loosen over time. Cured mine with a couple of thin lines of contact adhesive.

Where exactly do you apply the contact adhesive?

My dyson DC25 Animal, wont turn on. Is there something I can do to fix the problem

I called Dyson because I had a similar problem. When I pushed the red button down on my dc25, but it would not stay down. The vacuum would turn on when the button was pushed down, but of course when I let go of it the vacuum would shut off. The helpful telephone tech. Recognized the symptom right away and told me to push down on the button fully and let It flick up like a lighter. I about fell off my chair when that worked right away! Anyway for what it's worth, she said sometimes the mechanism in the buttons gets consnarlitated (my tern, not hers!) and this resets the spring...

Whistle noise from filter

Try moving the filter a little while it is running. This is a common problem caused by the air bypassing the filter. The more clogged the filter is the more it will whistle but sometimes it will whistle with a new filter. Sometimes you may get it stopped for a while but then it will start up again or come and go.

Why does my Dyson animal squeal on carpet

Hi, there are a number of different Dyson vacuums and they vary widely in construction. Unfortunately most models have an "animal" version so that's not helpful in identifying your particular cleaner. If you know the actual model number, I'm sure I might have some ideas of what will cause squeeling.

Off the top of my head, DC25's often have issues with "whistling HEPAs" but not usually carpet related, DC17's may exhibited brush roller noises if the belt is damaged. DC07's, 14's, 33's all have a clutch drive which sometimes fail causing "racheting" or other strange noises.
