If it started after you cleaned the filters, it is because when you smack the filter that is in the ball like they tell you to, it pushes the gasket in so air can sneak past it. take it back out and pull the rubber gasket away from the filter so there is about 1/16-1/8" away all the way around, then put it back in. it will seal it and stop.
What an easy fix! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Virtual life-saver.

The noise is caused by the air blowing out of the motor leaking out between the rubber gasket of the filter and the motor housing. Smearing a very thin film of silicone grease on the rubber gasket should stop the noise completely.
Another way of stopping the noise is to take a length of nylon cord or string about 16 inches (40cms) long and 1/8 to 3/16 inch (3 to 4mm) in diameter and insert it in the 'v' on the inner surface of the black rubber seal on the filter (it's hard to describe, but when holding the filter, it's easy to see where it goes). It only takes a minute and requires no tools, just your fingers. Fitting this cord raises the outer part of the seal just a bit to form a better air seal and prevent air being sucked in past the seal - it's this that causes the whining noise. This works well for me in my Dyson and is much better than the lubrication fix I posted above which solved the problem only for a couple of weeks.
I've retrospectively added a photo of the filter with the last 3 inches of the nylon cord still to be fed into the seal.. Hope this helps to visualise things.

The dc25 model tends to allow air to bypass the HEPA filter. The air makes a whistling sound. Remove the filter cover and try moving the filter around a little a see if it changes the sound. Sometimes it can be adjusted to stop the noise.
MINE WAS THE SEAL IN THE TOP PART OF THE DUST BIN PART NUMBER 911077-01 FOR THE DC25 ANIMAL. I HAD TO USE A STAR SCREW DRIVER TO TAKE OUT 6 SCREWS AND THE FOAM GASKET BROKE THROUGH. nOW IT IS QUITE AS A MOUSE
Bottom line is the air cant pass thru the flter any more They are not permant filters they need be changed If they where permant Dyson would not sell them

Do not attempt to seal these filters they need to be changed air cannot pass thru anymore and is pushing out thru the seals on the side. Filters need to have air go thru them to filter. If you leave them the motor will run hot and burn out Dyson DC25 Post Filter oem 916188 05 envirocare f978

My "howling" disappeared completely when I replaced both air filters with new ones; exact replacements are available on Amazon.
