Your system must be infected by virus, run Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete for windows), go to Processes tab and check which program is using the highest CPU%, if you are not familiar with that program, Right click on the process and Select End Task and then Ok. Run full scan using an updated antivirus and see the result.. Good luck.
There can be a whole lot of reasons for this. One of the most common is the graphics acceleration or a system overload that can be caused by so many things it would be impossible to go through them all here. If you are running an older version of windows, hit the control, alt and delete keys at the same time. (If you are using 7, see note at the bottom).
Hit them briefly and give it a second in between, because you will shut down your system if you do it in rapid succession.
That should open the task manager. There are several tabs, first click "applications."It will give you a list of all programs that are in use. Next to each it will say "running" or stopped.
Use the arrow keys or tab to get around if the mouse won't work and highlight the stopped program and end it. If nothing is listed as stopped, you can close each one to see if the system stabilizes.
Taking a look under the performance tab will tell you something about the drain on your computer.
Processes gives you info on what is running in the background and how much memory is being used.
If you can't access task manager, after the crash, go to system tools and the event viewer to get an idea of what is causing this.
To do that, go to control panel, performance and maintenance and take a look in the event viewer. It will give a break down of the time, date and type of errors in the system and software. You can use Windows diagnostic service by opening each error and clicking go to Microsoft in the dialog box.
If you are using Microsoft 7, the method of getting troubleshooting help is different, but they have some automated methods of zeroing in. Go to "fixit" on MS website.
After you have an inkling about where the problem is coming from, if you still need help come back and leave info in comments. Normally, the solution is self evident when you isolate the problem. Learning how to use the basic tools in your puter will save you a lot of money and aggravation in the future. So, don't feel daunted when you first start looking around.
