Battery polarity I have been told that the 6 volt battery on a Farmall 140 hooks up opposite of what one would think i.e.; the positive terminal on the battery hooks up to the ground on the tractor and the negative battery terminal hooks up to the positive on the tractor. Is this correct, and why?

I beleive every time you unhook your battery on a generator system you have to flash it to set the polarity . Also I think all delco 6 volts were pos ground . But this video from youtube should help you get it working. Polarizing Your Delco Remy Generator on Farmall SA Super
look for positve on battery a + sighn is what you are looking for on battery then find positive battery cable in tractor no witch it between pos cable neg cable hook neg to battery fist to battery then hook up positve cable ready to start
reversed polarity, check fuses. check the system for burnt wires also ! Always hook up your battery terminals correctly, as the alternator may be damaged if the battery is hooked up backward. jump start car, if it will. there should be at least 13.7 to 14.2 volts at battery posts while its running. if alternator is ok.
This one is easy to figure out. You can use a voltmeter or a 12 volt light bulb. Please one lead (wire) to the frame of the tractor and the other lead on a battery terminal. If the lamp lights when you place the lead on the POSITIVE terminal (or the meter reads 12 volts), it is a Negative grounded system. If the Lamp lights when you place the lead on the NEGATIVE terminal, it is a POSITIVE ground system.
Yes, polarity does matter. If you remove the front cover on the generator end you will see where the rings and brushes are located. The closest to you is positive and the ring that is towards the engine is negative. Trace those wires up into the control box and flash the genset there. The six volt battery is fine. I preferr 9 or 12 volt battery, so that I can produce a larger AC voltage.
