Hotpoint RLA30s Freezing!

Hi All,
I have a Hotpoint RLA30S Fridge that is freezing all of the food inside. This started after moving it from the kitchen to living room when I was redoing the kitchen.

I have just fitted a new thermostat sourced from Hotpoint but the simptoms are the same. Even at the warmest setting the compressor does not seem to turn off.

Does anyone know if there is another part that could have gone faulty or is there something I should have done when I fitted the new thermostat?

Thanks in advance all,

Rich.

Thanks for the reply, but, how do I check the relay? Do I check for continuity between certain pins?

  • Anonymous May 13, 2010

can someone give me advice on why my fridge is freezing? Thermastat has been changed. someone suggested the PCT relay but I do not know how to check it or even access it. Thank you.

The FREEZER determines the coldness in the refrigerator as well as the refrigerator itself. Even those that have a separate thermostats. This is because the units still share a single compressor. I would check your temperature control before trouble shooting other problems because it may just be set too high. Also make sure that you have not packed the bottom or top of the fridge too full. Bad air circulation will cause the thermostat to misread the temperature. Similarly, make sure that the seals around your door are good.

If all else fails, check that the fridge can drain properly. This doesn't usually cause freezing directly, but can cause ice to build up around fresh produce.

  • Shut down the fridge, let it drain out
  • In the back of the freezer, locate the small drain hole. Make sure this drain hole is clear. Remove any food particles if necessary, and pour small amounts of hot water down it until the water flows freely. You should be able to hear it drain.

Thank you for the reply JackHeath. The fridge is just a fridge and not a fridgefreezer, not does it have a freezer compartment in it.

Thanks for the link to the owners manual but I was after a service manual of some kind, one that gives the wirering details, dismantle/rebuild instructions and parts list. Do these exist?

I find a lot of my manuals and stuff here, looks like they might have it somewhere in that list but it needs the full model number.

You have done everything right. it seems that the new thermostat is faulty too. Send it back to HotPoint. Unless there is a short circuiting after the thermostat, ie, between the thermo and the compressor. These are the only two reasons that could have caused the problem.

This does sound like a "small gas leak" that causes the fridge not to reach the full cold point of the thermostat. This is because the gas that has leaked out causes the fridge to get cold BUT never reach the cut off point of the thermostat. What follows is that the fridge eventualy now slowly warms up and ends up not getting cold (can take a week or 2). You will need to find the leak (very small) fix it and then re-gas the fridge.

Thanks for the reply joe_lishman but I'm not sure that makes sense to me, the fridge does not have a problem getting cold - its freezing. T'his sounds like the apposite to what you have suggested. The fridge gets colder and colder and freezes the food. I have fitted a new thermostat, someone has suggested the PCT relay? There is a module on the side of the compressor but I cannot see how to gget it off, nor can I see it as a part on Hotpoints spare parts list.

  • Anonymous May 12, 2010

Fridge freezing up

Check the fridge sensor. On my Hoover HNMF2805AL80 f/f, first I replaced control module - still freezing.
Have just replaced cheap fridge temperature sensor. Part No. 97061619. Trouble is you have to cut into insulation at back of fridge to replace. I just plugged in sensor & placed inside fridge at back at the bottom - so far so good, only lettuce freezing now, everything else v. cold but not frozen. :)

Ffa70 hotpoint fridge freezer

Adjust the temperature control for the freezer to a normal setting. Fast freeze is only for when new products are put in that need to be frozen. This locks the system into a continuous run mode and could be responsible for the freezing condition in the refrigerator section. Check the temperatures with a thermometer as the sensor for the freezer temperature could be bad causing the light to come on.
