Do you mean the beaters? Take a look near the top of the beater shaft. Does it have a slot which holds a wire ring? If the wire ring is missing, that would explain why it won't stay in. Try shopping for a new set of beaters if that's the problem.
I bought an old GM mixer no. 30M47 with no beaters yesterday at the Salvation Army store. The beaters I have for a newish (ugly) GE hand held beater fit perfectly. I suggest taking your old beater to a store that sells new GE handheld beaters and seeing if the new beaters fit. If anyone reads this and wants me to look up the number of the new ugly beater for them, please say so before I take it to the Salvation Army.. : )
