Check and make sure you don't have the exposure compensation settings set higher than 0. There is a manual override feature that lets you apply over/under exposure compensation to every photo rather than manually setting it for each shot. Sometimes, this feature can get accidentally changed. If that's not the issue try to reset the camera back to its default settings through the menu feature.
You will ahve to set up exactly the conditions you want for the default reset. Color option, quantity, manual or Auto exposure, etc. Then press the additional Functions key, then copy settings, press the down arrow key until Standard Settings is displayed, then depress it and then store key not initilize then OK ( YES ). This should get you in the general area of storing the settings you want.
You may have changed the EV (exposure value) settings, or put it into manual mode. Try to find these settings in the menus and put them back to default or auto.
This can happen if you have ISO control set to Auto and have spot metering selected, especially if it's set to spot shadow or spot highlight. Over exposure probably means it's set to spot shadow metering.
With spot metering the camera measures exposure from just a very small point in the scene, and so slight camera movements will cause the metering spot to wander onto different exposure settings very easily. If the camera is either set to use restricted apertures or shutter speeds due to program or lens limitations then it will compensate by adjusting the ISO settings instead
Never use auto ISO, just choose what you need for the conditions rather than using the camera's best (& usually poor) guess. Alsonever use spot metering unless you know why you're using it. The default multi-pattern metering is extremely accurate for most situations.
Please check the camera settings based on what I've said, if it fixes your problem then please rate my answer. If not then please add further details of which lenses and camera settings you're using and I'll try to help you further.

the Exposure button will generally be disabled in auto mode
try changing it to 'P' (Program) mode and then change the exposure by pressing the +/- button and then you would generally see a scale on the LCD now press the left button to decrease the exposure
better more is to reset the camera to the default settings this would set the aperture, shutter, Exposure, LCD brightness and otehr settings to defaults and this would save from any unwanted changes than required

we have all done that, go into you bios and there you will see install default settings, they will tell you the key like F5 or F9 then save and exit. that will install your default settings. If you only have a problem or two tell us what the are the type and model of your computer and the operating system you employ. Most of the time it is only reinstall a driver or two... good luck, please leave rating. thank you
Even in automatic mode, camera still lets you pick what ISO to use. If ISO-Auto is OFF in camera menus, this can give some dark images. Press and hold ISO button and rotate command dial to give a higher ISO, or turn ISO-Auto on in camera menu with crayon icon. Also note that the camera saves exposure compensation setting for each mode,
