SOURCE: Trouble starting and a lot of black smoke at startup

Could be. Black smoke means too muck fuel or not burning properly. Also make sure your oil is not over full.

SOURCE: When I start my toro

Hi ldroth22..

Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting fire at the spark plug, if you are then:
Check your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instrucitons you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.

How do i fix my lawnmower

  • If you are using good quality gas, you may need to change the gas filter or air filter and make sure the gas line is not kinked.
Occasionally, the air filter can be partially cleaned by gently tapping it or some types of air filters can be rinsed and reused.

  • If the gas is contaminated, you will need to remove and/or empty the gas tank and use high octane gas for 2-3 fills.
  • If none of these options resolve the issue, you may need to check and/or to change the spark plug and its connection.
  • If all else fails, consider the cost of a major service vs replacement.

Toro personal pace 20372, starts fine, runs well for 30 or 40 minutes then dies. Starts up again when cooled down just a bit.

Need fuel that is not more than a couple months old

Need a good or clean spark plug

Have no idea how old it is, or how many years
you have used it

Sometimes you have to remove the head & clean the
carbon off the piston & head
That is a tune-up on small equipment

Make sure the air filter is clean

They usually start with the air filter off,but you don't
want to do that all the time

What is wrong with a Toro GTS5 that starts well but dies 5-10 seconds later. I have changed the spark plug, air filter and oil. New gas too. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I had a similar problem. I'll bet I took off the carb. 5 - 6 times and cleaned it with no success. Very fustrating! One time while checking the fuel level I accidently left off the gas cap, I started it and while running I put the gas cap back on and started to mow and about 10 seconds it died. I thought could'nt be! So I loosened the cap, restarted and it kept running. Any way the small vent hole was plugged. Thats my story!. Good luck.

I have to prime the toro mower every time I empty the bag to get it to start?

  1. what is the model, manufacturer and year of mower?
  2. has any maintenance been performed on this mower?
  3. if no, try replacing the spark plug and air filter (it's possible the spark plug could be fouled and/or the air filter is clogged) be sure to follow the manufacturers recommendations for oil, gas, filters and plugs.
routine maintenance involves:
  1. sharpen/replace blade
  2. oil change
  3. replace air filter
  4. replace spark plug
  5. new gas

My lawnmower wont start. changed the spark plug, air filter and still wont start. Has gas in it and everything.

Has it sat out in the rain? You may have rust on the magneto. Or there may be gunk in the carburetorSquirt just a little gas into the carburetor and crank it. If it fires up but dies, you have carburetor problems. If that is the case you will need tho remove it and clean it ( boil it in soapy water ).If no spark, you will need to remove cover and take off the magneto and sand off the rust. Then put a little oil on it to protect it. When re-installing it bring it to almost touching and tighten it.
