MacBook Pro has been reformated, but when I go to reinstall the software, the cd-rom does not appear to be working. How difficult is it to replace a cd-rom drive? Here are the specs of the laptop - http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/stats/macbook_pro_2.16_17.html
The fact that you realized replacement might be the best option and sought out advice tells me you are intelligent by nature. On a difficulty scale of 1-10 I would rate this in the 6-7 range. Someone like you would probably have very little trouble with this project. I have sent countless step by step instructions over the internet & through email but it seems like the best results always come from an in-depth tutorial, This way you can see EVERY step and even rewind if you're not sure about something. Powerbookmedic.com has a wonderful tutorial on the 17" MacBook Pro breakdown and optical drive (cd/dvd) removal. Just remember to always start with taking the battery out and be very careful about electrostatic shock. You should be fine on a hard surface but I don't recommend fabric/carpet surfaces once you open it up. Here is the link for your laptop. The videos will play in succession automatically. Good luck, you'll do just fine! If you run into trouble, just message back and I will be glad to walk you through it: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/stats/macbook_pro_2.16_17.html
