No communication between UI and CCU

Having issue with machine throwing F70 and F71 codes. Have unplugged and plugged back in to maybe get it to reset itself but then as soon as it is plugged back in and press on power it just beeps at you and no lights come on. F70 and F71 are issues dealing with lack of communication between the UI and CCU thinking maybe the CCU is out. Already replaced the UI. Any ideas?

Hi.

I think that by this time you already fixed the problem. The codes indicate usually a fault that is either CCU or MCU.

Please read the tip below, explaining how to fix F70 and F71 problems. The comment applies to Whirlpool built kenmore washers like the one in question.

Whirlpool duet F70 and F71 error codes.

F70 and F71 are two logic board error codes that point at a communication error between the main logic module and the control pad (user interface and CCU), and between the motor control unit and central control (MCU, andd CCU that is main control module).
Repair is difficult, as motor, wiring and voltages from control modules must be tested.

Try first doing a reset, by disconnecting power cord or tripping circuit breaker and leaving power off for five minutes.

If that does not help and errors come back, then the best thing to do is calling the service number listed on the user manual.

Here extensive explanation of error codes and relative troubleshooting:

F70: CENTRAL CONTROL UNIT HEARTBEAT FAILURE
If a Central Control Unit Heartbeat Failure is displayed, no communication is detected from the Central Control Unit to the User Interface.

1. Check for continuity of the User Interface harness.
2. Check wire harness connections to the User Interface and the Central Control Unit.
3. Replace User Interface if drum is rotating.
4. Replace Central Control Unit if drum is not moving

F71: USER INTERFACE HEARTBEAT FAILURE
If a Central Control Unit Heartbeat Failure is displayed, no communication is detected from the User Interface to the Central Control Unit.

1. Check for continuity of the User Interface harness.
2. Check wire harness connections to the User Interface and the Central Control Unit.
3. Replace User Interface if drum is rotating.
4. Replace Central Control Unit if drum is not moving.

What do the following codes mean: F70 and F71. My washer is a Kenmore Elite HE5t. Thank you

Hello,

The F70&F71 mean basically the same thing

F70 means the main control board is not communicating with the cycle selector/touch pad control
F71 means the cycle selector/touch pad controlis not communicating with the main control board

What needs to be checked is the wires between the main control(CCU) and the selector(user interface) for good tight connections
If all connections are good and tight the CCU has to be replaced IF the drum will rotate under power from the motor

OR if the drum will NOT rotate under power of the motor the USER INTERFACE needs to be replaced

I have whrilpool front loader, when washing some times I get a error F70 & F71. The washer stops, clothes are not rinse alaway. What can I do. I don't have my munual handy. Thanks for your...

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

F70 is a communication error which is caused when no communication is detected from the user interface to the CCU (central control unit). Please check the wiring to user interface and the central control unit, if that is fine and you can see the drum rotating then replacing the user interface is recommended repair. If the drum won't turn then the CCU needs replacement. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

I have a Kenmore model 11049962603 that displayed an f-71 error code. I ordered a new cpu computer from sears and installed it. the machine seemed to work for one or two loads. now it displays an f-70...

I provided a complete list of error codes for this type of washer in the image below. The error codes vary by the exact model of HE3t washer that you have. Since you have an HE3t that is displaying the F70 and F71 codes, the list below should apply to your model. These are not listed in the owner's manual because they are intended for technicians. Use extreme caution if you follow any of the troubleshooting described in this information sheet. Unplug the washer and shut off the water supply before accessing internal components.

The F70 and F71 codes indicate that you have a communication error between the CCU (Central Control Unit or main machine control board) and the user interface touch pad assembly. Here are some troubleshooting tips:

Make sure that you have the washer plugged into a properly grounded 3 prong 120 volt AC electrical outlet.

Unplug the washer for 30 seconds to allow the control boards to power down and reset. Plug the washer back in but do not touch the power button (or any other buttons) for 1 full minute. This may reset the control board. Pressing the power button too quickly after reapplying electrical power to the washer can cause the F70 or F71 code since the CCU does not have time to recognize the user interface control.

If the above tip does not help then the most suspect component failure is the MCU (motor control unit -- motor control board at the bottom of the washer beside the drive motor). You can check for this failure by unplugging the washer and then pulling the MI3 connection on the CCU. The wiring diagram below has the MI3 connection highlighted in red. The connection has blue wires. The third image below shows this connection on the control board. The connections are labeled on the control board. Press the tab at the bottom of this plug down and then pull it out. Power up the machine with this connection unplugged and don't touch any buttons for 1 minute. If you then press the power button to turn on the washer and don't get the F70 or F71 code then the MCU at the bottom of the washer will likely need to be replaced to fix this problem. A technician would normally be needed to verify this failure and replace the MCU. The MCU is expensive ($423).

This troubleshooting information is based on a common HE3t model that displays the F70 and F71 codes. If you need more help, submit additional details and the full model number of your HE3t washer.

F71 fault code

This is usually when there is no connection or communication between the user interface and the central control unit. The easiest fix would be if it is just a loose connection in the wire harness to the UI or the CCU. Otherwise it's a problem with the UI or CCU and the problem one would need to be replaced.

What does code F70 and F71 mean on my whirlpool duet?

Error code F70 means no communication is detected from the Central Control Unit (CCU) to the User Interface while F71 is the reverse; no communication detected from the User Interface to the Central Control Unit (CCU). This could simply mean a loose or poor connection between the two communicating boards.

Disconnect power to the washer prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Remove the three screws attaching the top panel to the rear of the washer then slide the panel rearward and lift it off the washer.

Disconnect the User Interface ribbon connector from the left side of the Central Control Unit (CCU) and clean the connector and terminals thoroughly. Reseat the connector several times to ensure a good connection between the Central Control Unit (CCU) and the User Interface.

It is highly recommended to clean and reseat every wiring harness connector from the Central Control Unit (CCU) to prevent the same problem in the near future.

Reconnect every wiring harness to the CCU and make sure all connectors are firmly seated. Slide the top panel back into position and secure it to the rear of the washer with the screws previously removed.

Let us know if the problem persists for further assistance. We will be happy to resolve your problem.
