Its probably trying to boot from your external drive.
Go into your bios and reset your boot setting to HDD0 as your first boot device, Disk drive 0 second and floppy third, unless you want to boot from an external drive. That being the case select an appropriate order.
If the bios shows your external HDD as HDD0, then you have to work out which is the drive carrying the operating system and set that to your first boot device.
To get into the bios, watch the boot screen for a key to hit to enter setup, normally its the "DEL" key.
dgsturt, I am having the same problem as joepols. But I can’t apply the fix you suggest.
My BIOS (AMI BIOS revision 3.28, 08/27/04) with Setup Utility v 2.51 already has my internal hard drive as the first boot device. It is identified by name[PM-ST3120025A], and not as HDD0.
Incidentally, another external drive that is sometimes attached to the USB hub does not interfere with the XP’s boot process, and neither did an older external drive that the XL1000 replaced.
For now my only workaround is to unplug the XL1000 during the boot sequence, and plug it back in after the operating system starts. This is doubly inconvenient given that the XL1000 does not have a power switch.

I think the issue may be down to the size of your external hard drive. WinXP can only see HDD up to 127Ghz, yours I believe is 1TB (1000Ghz). This being the case, I think you need to partition your external hard drive into lumps of 127Ghz or less.
This can be done by using a programme such as partition magic, but the easiest way is to use another PC with a different O/S such as Vista, WIn7 or Linux to partition the drive. With luck it should then work on your XP PC.
I want to emphasize that the computer doesn't detect the external drive DURING the boot up process and stops it from continuing. This is before XP loads. Once XP has started, I power up the External drive, and everything is OK. I doubt very much that partitioning is the answer.
When you wrote Ghz, you meant GB!. Right?
Apologies for misreading, and yes you're right I did mean 127 Gb. Partitioning would probably be necessary if you wanted to boot from the external drive.
Now back to the problem, if I'm reading this right the XL 1000 is interfering with the boot process when turned on prior to your PC.
My only other thought is, back to your bios setup, of the several boot options,is one of the boot settings on "external device"? if so try switching it out, choose no device if necessary. But don't change your first boot option.
After this I'm at a loss, save for trying the Hitachi web site, contacting their techs for advice or like other companies, do they run a forum for problem solving.

I have Hitachi 1 TB HD, XP professional on HP desktop.I bought 1 TB to exchange my regular 500Gb. Start to install HD was formated only 120 Gig. Excess to Bios would not help/ No extra options to change size of HD. How can I reformat that dist to 1 TB? Fdisk or format did not work.
