Here is the way to find the Lat/Lon Info on TomTom.
Tap on main screen. You will be taken to Main menu 1 of 2. Tap on the arrow. You will move to Main menu 2 of 2. Tap on Browse map. You will see the lat/Lon info on the bottom left hand corner (of a selected location) Tap on another location and you will see that the lat/Lon will change to that of the newly selected location. You can use the slider on the right hand side to zoom in or zoom out so that you can get the Lat/Lon info of far off locations. However, for this purpose, google maps would be a better option. But if you know the address, use the find button which will give you easier access to Lat/Lon info.

Does aby know if my Garmin 1310 can use OS grd references instead of longditute and latitude? If so how is it set up?

Unfortunately Garmin satnavs do not allow OS Grid References instead of Longitude and Latitude. However if you need to find the Longitude and Latitude of a point it can be done by going to http://www.gorissen.info/Pierre/maps/googleMapLocationv3.php Zoom in on the location you want and left click on it. The longitude and latitude will appear in a box to the right of the map. You need to set the co-ordinate system of the satnav to match the longitude and latitude format of the satnav. To do this touch Where to, Co-Ordinates, Format. Enter the co-ordinates and touch next. It's not an ideal solution but it might help you out if you're stuck.

Can my TomTom XXL 540-S be used with GPS coordinates?

If you are referring to Latitude and Longitude , yes. You can use those co-ordinates to navigate to a destination. This especially works fine in countries where the Avenue and street information is not available. Google maps can give you the latitude and longitude coordinates. You can fed those into the GPS and navigate. Please note, you will need the maps of the region involved. Click (Tap) on the main screen. Tap on: navigate to Tap on : arrow Tap on: Latitude longitude Enter latitude and longitude using keyboard, Latitude first and longitude next. Be careful while you do this and do not forget to enter the directions North, West etc.

I can send you a powerpoint presentation that explains it in a little more detail. To really learn how to read latitude and longitude you should pick up a copy of “Chapman’s Piloting and Seamanship.”

The earth is divided into parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude, also known as lines of position.

clip_image002.jpg

Latitude is measured north and south of the equator, with the equator represented as 0 degrees, and the poles being represented as 90 degrees North or South. Latitude lines are paralel to the equator. For example, if I was at the equator I would be at 0 degrees. If I traveled exactly 60 nautical miles to the north, I would be at 1 degree North, and if I traveled another 60 miles I would be at 2 degrees north. Your GPS display will preface the Latitude measurement with an “N” for positions North of the equator and an “S” for positions south of the equator.

Longitude measures your position east or west from the Prime Meridian, which is a line represented as 0 degrees that bisects the earth from north to south and passes through Greenwich England. Halfway around the earth at the International Dateline Longitude is 180 degrees. Measuring Longitude is a little more complicated because the lines are not parallel and requires an accurate clock (your GPS) to compare time at your location relative to the time in Greenwich England. Your GPS display will preface the Longitude measurement with a “W” for positions west of Greenwich and an “E” for positions east of Greenwich.

To make more accurate measurements each degree is divided into 60 minutes. Because the lines are parallel, 1 minute of latitude is equal to 1 nautical mile. Each minute can be further divided into 60 seconds. Each second is roughly equivalent to a distance of 100’ Instead of seconds, the default setting on your Garmin breaks the minute down into tenths, hundredths, and thousandths for meven more precise measurements. Because they are not parallel, lines of Longitude are measured the same way, but the distances vary depending on how far north or south of the equator.

To find out where you are with a GPS, you need a map that shows lines of latitude and longitude on it. The lines will be labeled on the map or along the borders of the map. Most nautical charts show the latitude measurements along the right the left border of the map. Longitude measuremnts will be shown along the top and bottom edges.

TomTom One 3rd Edition - Latitute Longitude are Wrong

Are you sure that you have set the latitude and longitude units correctly? Under Preferences go to Set Units, press done until you come to latitudes and longitudes. You have three choices, Degrees in decimal form, Minutes, or Minutes and Seconds. Printed maps might use any of these forms of latitude and longitude. Avation maps are usually different than ground maps. Hiking maps also use either of the three forms.
