Our GE Profile Spacemaker microwave started making a strange grinding or groaning noise this morning..and a few louder "pops". These stopped and now it has stopped heating. Lights, turntable, fans are still working, but it is not heating. Any ideas? Thanks...

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support
with rollers, and the tray.
You can see and hear
a video of how a turntable motor should
sound when you rotate it by hand.
If yours is not set to be off via the
control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you
may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.
To replace either, you need to unplug power,
then remove the bottom cover of the oven.
On some, you have to cut the motor cover off with snips, then use a screw when
reassembling it.
You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your
full model number from the tag on the oven
here.
It could be that the "grinding" noise was actually "arcing" taking place inside the cavity or uder the cover. The magnatron is possibly damaged or the h.v. diode. Should be repaired by qualified repairman
WHEN THERE IS A BUZZING NOISE IT MEANS THAT ONE OF THE INTERNAL COMPONENT HAS FAILED .RANGING FROM A SMALL DIODE TO LARGE PARTS LIKE THE MAGNETRON OR TRANSFORMER OR CAPACITOR. IF IT IS 10 YRS,OLD YOUR BETTER OFF GETTING A NEW ONE .BECAUSE YOU COULD INVEST MONEY IN THIS ONE AND HAVE SOMETHING ELSE GO TWO DAYS FOR NOW.WITH A NEW ONE YOU ALSO END UP WITH THE NEW WARRANTY. HOPE I HELPED. KEN62 GOOD DAY!
I have a GE Profile Spacemaker model JVM3670WF001, purchased I think in 2003. Pop sound, no Heat. Light goes on, carousel goes around, Repair or new microwave
Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!
