Have you made sure your vga (video cable is connected) and do you have an onboard video card or PCI or AGP video card?

possibility of power supply gone bad for u ..
check if there is a Green light below the Power Supply cord on the back side of ur computer..
U would be able to locate a Toggle switch to change the Wattage on the back side.. toggle it once ..
then try to see if there is a led light there..
still if no light.. try changing the power supply inlet.. try switching the power supply cord with another one .. you can use monitor power supply cord for the same.. and then check..
still need assistance.. let me know..
    regards,

Hi ,

If the green light comes on on the front panel then it means the fan is spinning so what u can do is a self test for the monitor.Disconnect the vga cable from the back panel of the computer tower and then check if there is a message displayed on the monitor that should say check video signal or no inoput signal ,if there is no such message displayed then it means the monitor is a fault .If not then reset the memory card and then check .U can also run a test for the motherboard to do this u will have to remove the memory card and then turn the computer on if u hear long beeping noise it means the motherboard is fine .If u dont hear any sound then the mother board needs to be repaired or replaced...

all the best

The cd writer/dvd tray on my hp pavilion 533w will not open. When I press the button to open the green light comes on and I can hear a whirring sound but then the light goes out and tray doesn't open....

I understand you can't find that pin hole that's supposed to be there. but just to clarify it's supposed to be on the face of the cd/dvd, not the case. also, just trying to help, did you try opening it WHILE your pc was booting up? maybe try from windows explorer and right click on the drive from that window and try eject or open option.

The picture scrambles several times during the day and the only way to stop it is shut the computer off at the tower and then restart and reboot. We borrowed a monitor to see if that was the problem but...

The picture scrambles because the video chip overheats and malfunctions. Open the case and do a full cleaning. If necessary add an extra fan - $10 at all IT shops.

PC shuts down while running Windows

Attempt to boot the machine in Safe-Mode.

While powering up continuously hit F8.

You will get a Boot Option Menu, Select Safe-Mode boot

If you can get into safe-mode I would suggest to try doing an online scan, as it sounds like your issue could be related to malware:
