No, you do not need to replace the bulb. Before doing so, check the capacitors. Most of them are Chinese made, therefore they bulge out. 1st, take your back plate off, inspect them for any bulging, if present, remove the whole board and take it to an electrician which in turn will remove the bad ones and re-solder the new ones on. I know this, because my TV stopped working while I was deployed. After doing the research myself, I got it to work. It's been over 5 years since it's last issue.

If your Hitachi television has sound but a black screen, it is likely that either the bulb or the inverter has gone bad. The inverter is a part of the backlight system. If the inverter is not functioning, the backlight will not work and the television will be dark. You should check to see if the bulb needs to be replaced first. If your model number is HD50LPW175 and the power light is blinking 5 times thats telling you the lamp needs replacement before the set can power up. You can get the replacement Lamp assembly with installation instructions from www.tvrepairworld.com

The screen is almost totally black.
You may need a new projector bulb for your tv. Search for "JVC Projection TV Replacement Bulb" + your tv model number on amazon.com and you should be able to find one.
Once you have the bulb, refer to your TV manual to install the bulb.

Replaced cracked display screen with new one and screen is black. System works with external monitor. Is there any drivers that need installed?
1. Test using an external monitor. If it works, then either the screen bulb or the inverter board might be defective.
2. Test the inverter. Easiest way to do it if you have a good screen with a good bulb. Connect the good screen to the inverter board & test it. If it lights up, then the inverter board is good. If it did not, then the inverter board is bad & needs to be replaced.
3. If the inverter board is good, then we are left with the possibility that the screen bulb is bad. To fix this, we will need to replace the LCD screen.

The bulb says it has 41 hours on it but colors appear to be dull. Things that are somewhat dark in a video show up almost black on the screen. Is this a bulb isssue or something else? This is an HP VP6310.
If your screen id not as bright as it schooled be then you need to replace the bulb.

If it goes black and the power is still up then you need to replace the inverter. This is most times the problem and very common. The other possible problem is the bulbs, however the inverter is not very expensive and reletively easy to change. It is located just below the screen behind the besel that is around the screen. If it turns out to be bulbs you will need to look for a replacement screen.

My monitor works for a little while, then goes black.
Your power-inverter board needs an overhaul.
Probably in need of the standard capacitor replacement.
OR
a bulb in the screen is bad (a bad bulb will usually show symptoms)
It will flicker, or will look pinkishish for a bit or dark in the middle top or bottom of the screen.

Black screen
Sounds like the bulb again. In the manual it says that the power light flashes to let you know that the bulb is bad. When I got a replacement bulb, I noticed that the wiring on it was opposite of the one on my set and had to change the wiring to match my set.
