Sony M-2000 Transcriber. The tapes have good sound for 2-3 seconds then fades to barely audible then if you lift foot off the pedal, the tape stops rewinds a bit and if you press the foot pedal again it sounds good 2-3 seconds. Goes on until you get about 1/2 to 3/4 way thru tape then it is fine. Have replaced tapes, had different users, etc. Thanks

Most likley it is a bad motor or a broken belt. There is a seperate motor or FF and Rewind.. If the motor is bad it is likly that the motor control circuit board is bad also (motor shorts and takes out the board also). If there is no "click" when play is selected it could be the play solenoid is dirty and not engaging. I have repaired thousand of these units through the years and in spite of these issues they were a great sounding unit.
BTW this is true for the VW-210, VW-260, p-139 and simular units.

There is a gear that wears causing the grinding noise. This can cause the take up reel to stop causing distortion. You need to send it in for repair.

Just talked to Exec. Communication Systems. He said that the play motor is not turning (the rewind and fast forward uses a separate motor) and the problem is either the belt or the motor. They can repair them at $82.00 plus parts and shipping.
