Remove the Thinkpad main battery. Look for a small yellow disk. This is the CMOS battery. It is connected to the motherboard with two (2) wires that plug into the motherboard. The plug is included on the wires of a new battery. Check EBay for Thinkpad CMOS batteries. I have also heard Radio Shack in some cases carries this battery.

Poweredge 1950 won't start

this is common, if your place was cold its possible that something has died when turning on again, you could try and pull out ram in an order to see if one has failed, get the memtest download and make a boot disk to test the ram has not become faulty, test each stick alone, Hiren boot disk has all the good stuff for testing, its a free tecky tool for engineers.

I have an ei system 103a desktop i have had to sytem restore now when i turn pc on it tells me to press f1 to start windows i have tried going into the bios and boot from hardisk but still have the problem...

The 'Press F1 to continue" message is a result of an error caused as the BIOS does its hardware checks during the boot process.

The BIOS boot process (bootstrap) preceeds the loading of the operating system.

The most amusing example of this occurs if you unplug a ps2 keyboard,
1, it generates the error
2, pressing F1 does no good because the keyboard is not plugged in.
3, if its ps2, you will need to do a hardware reset after plugging the keyboard in again.

The bios can be set to 'halt on'
'no errors' which will stop the error message appearing.
'keyboard errors' see above
'all errors' any hardware failure detected by the bios will halt the boot process and give the above message.

Hard Disk and Booting issue

go into your BIOS and on the bottom of your screen there should be a (last good config) of (fail-safe config) value for one or=f the F1 to F12 buttons. also. are you running a 4gb hdd??? or is that a typo? anyhow, XP REQUIRES 2GB at all times free if your hdd is running at less that that (cause its full) your boot up could be messed around. finally make sure that the little plug on your hdd is across the Master or cable select pins not the slave as this can cause probs too. good luck.
