I have the exact same problem. My Archos 605 was detected fine by my computer (Windows XP SP2) the first day I used the player, but after that, when I try to plug it in, my computer only recognizes it as an MTP device, but it fails to install properly.

Thanks modex, alas it has not altered, the problem of recognizing by windows only as an mtp device is still there.

I still am unable to access the archos.

I have tried the Archos on another XP SP2 computer and this machine has no problem recognizing the Archos all the time.My thoughts are, my pc is at fault ??? althoughat this point in time i`m stumped.

My Archos 504 80G is not recognized in my PC. Rather it displays Malfunction.

  • Anonymous Apr 04, 2008

I have just pluged my Archos into the PC that would not recognize it last week, when i opened (my computer) there was the A605 drive. I opened it and found I could open all files and folders and also download more music to it. To the best of my knowledge I have made no changes to either the Archos or my PC other than the two solutions posted here.

I still think something is amiss with my PC.as it works ok in other PC`s and will investigate further and post my findings later. the changes as Guest sugested in BEST SOLUTION have been left on my Archos i.e. (hard drive) configeration

I think I have solved this issue by default, after checking out an unrelated problem (so I thought) and downloading microsofts autoplay repair wizard and installing, my pc again recognizes the A605 wifi .

The site i found www.xaddr.com/2id has the link to MS repair wizard. Give it a try and see what happens

  • Anonymous Jun 03, 2008

I have checked various other help forums and one thing has come to light the 605 stumbles, if it gets warm (hot) this is most common when the 605 is left docked in the dvr station.

If you are having problems with the Archos, try undocking it, switch it off, leave it overnight to cool, then try again next day.

Hey ! anthings worth a try when your in the sh1t.

I have the same problem, but thing is, I had already tried all those fixes before I resorted to online help. I have no blinking idea what's wrong, it was working fine a coupla days ago. I even downloaded memory managers and reduced the process footprints. I am near desperate. PLEASE help me!

    Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem using my Archos 605 Wifi and Windows 7. Similar to one of the other posts, I went to Device Manager and saw the yellow yield sign/exclamation point. Per the advice above, I tried to update the driver, but Win7 came back and said the best driver was installed. So I went ahead and uninstalled the Archos device, unplugged it from my PC, then plugged it back in. Win7 identified it as a new device, installed it, and I was back in business.

My primary reason for wanting this problem fixed was that I use Amazon's Video on Demand software (Unbox) on my PC and want to copy portable versions of movies and TV shows onto my Archos 605 wifi for long plane rides. Now Win7 recognizes my Archos device and the Amazon Unbox software can see it to transfer movies.

Very very important last step: If your Archos is still not being recognized after following the above steps, unplug the USB cable for a few seconds then reinsert making sure it's all the way in. The Archos screen will ask if you want to enable USB. Of course you do. Then you'll be back in business

I had the same problem with my Archos 605 and here's how I fixed it....

Right click on My Computer, then click on Properties. Under the Hardware tab click on Device Manager. My Archos was shown under Portable Devices but with an exclamation point next to it. I right clicked on Archos 605 wifi and then clicked on Update Driver. This updated the MTP driver and now everything is working fine.

Bikegit,
I called tech support and they had a simple fix for me. You need to change the way the Archos is recognized as a USB device from a Windows Media Device to a hard drive. You can change this setting under Settings > System. This fixed the problem for me, but I think you miss out on some functionality by not using the Archos as a Window Media Device, particularly being able to use protected content.

Hay everyone, i had the same problem with am Archos 5 250Gb "USB device not recognized" i think the main problem was that its Windows i was using at the time so the easy fix is install Ubuntu (Linux) ether as a small partition on your HDD or the live disk, plug in the usb hook it up to the Archos and it just works perfectly. www.ubuntu.com just download and burn the iso easy as that.

My archos vision 1 is not recognised by computer

Hi, archos vision 1 player not recognized by the computer

This may be caused by one of the following:
1. Minimum system requirements were not met.
2. Corrupted drivers.
3. Computer restrictions.
4. Power issue.

To resolve this issue, try the following solutions:

SOLUTION 1 - For brand new player or first time connecting to this computer.

For Windows XP users: verify the following operating system requirements are met.
- Windows XP SP2 or higher
- Windows Media Player 10 or higher

Download and install the latest Windows Media Player if it's not installed.

For Windows Vista users: If the player is seen in My Computer when using MTP mode, but not showing in Windows Media Player.
- Download the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939211.
- Run the hotfix.

For MAC users, see archos vision 1 player not recognized by a MAC OS

NOTE: If you are trying to connect to a Computer at work that is part of a network, there may be user right restrictions that are set to disable access to new hardware or stop any program installations. You may need to check with your IT administrator to see if this is causing the problem.

SOLUTION 2 - Refresh the driver

STEP 1 - Connect the archos vision 1 player to the PC
The screen on your player should turn on, show 'Connected' and indicate the battery charging or full.
- If the player does not turn on try other USB ports or on another computer if one is readily available. Ensure you are connecting directly to the computer USB port and not to a USB hub.
- If there is nothing showing on the screen and the player does show up in as a storage device in an explorer window, then the screen is just not working.

If you receive the error "USB Device Not Recognized" on the computer, the player is most likely failed. Additional troubleshooting is unlikely to correct the problem.

STEP 2 - Check under Device Manager
1. Right-click My Computer, and select Manage.
Image
2. Click Device Manager on the left pane.
Image

NOTE: archos vision 1 Players can connect to your computer in MSC or MTP mode. Exceptions are archos vision 1 Connect and archos vision 1 Express which only use MTP mode. MTP mode is the recommended and default method for archos vision 1 Players when used with Windows OS.

The archos vision 1 player will show up on Device Manager's right pane as:
1. USB Mass Storage device (if the player is set to MSC)
2. Portable Device (if the player is set to MTP mode)

If there is a yellow exclamation point (!) or question mark (?) beside the device, try to refresh the drivers.

STEP 3 - Refresh the drivers
1. Right-click the entry with the error mark, select Uninstall.
2. On the top menu, click Action then select Scan for hardware changes.

NOTE: If a device with yellow exclamation point (!) continually appears and disappears, then the player is most likely failed. Additional troubleshooting is unlikely to correct the problem.

Have a nice day....

Archos won't connect by USB to computers

You should keep your eye on the device after its been plugged to the PC it will give you 2 options "charge" or "usb" you ca not establish a connection without picking usb connection option on the Archos screen when it pops up. If you are doing so and problem still existed then i would recommend you to download the latest windows media player. Because it comes with new devices sync driver update.

Archos not seen by pc

This can happen to any external drive on a pc. If the Archos is set to PC Hard Drive mode, then plug it into you PC and click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
In the console tree, click Disk Management.
You can now allocate a drive letter to the Archos.
If you cannot see your Archos in this window, then you may have a dodgey usb cable.

Archos 605 not being recognized

I think most of the problems come from the fact the archos unit gets to hot, leaving it plugged into the docking station for charging and downloads does not help. Try leaving it to cool down overnight then plug it in next day. My PC recognized it as A605 straightaway. My pc is still in hard drive mode and when plugged into the pc it recognizes it as an Archos A605 unit and can be adressed as normal.
