Hi,
If you keep kicking the reset you have a thermostat that is bad...it could be either the top or the bottom one...but you will have the check and see if it is switching to the bottom element or not...if it does switch to the bottom it is the bottom t-stat bad, if not then the top one is bad...

I have norton tankless water heater, and the reset keeps getting tripped... what can cause this?

It can be the breakers in your house or the reset button is malfunctioning

I have no hot water in my home i can not locate the reset button

The reset button is located on the top thermostat, on the heater you will see a acess panel with screws in it to remove the thermostat and element is behind this panel. Once removed the top thermostat should have a red button to press to reset heater.
If it resets then wait for a little time for hot water. If this doesn't work then it could be the elements are in need of changing.

I have a Reliance 501 model # 5 30 2srs4. I had to reset the unit after waking up to cold water. The water heated up in no time at all but the water was super hot. So hot it triped the reset button again....

Hi,
No, the top thermostat will always heat first and then it should dwitch the power to the bottom one after the top of the tank heats...this is to get you hot water faster...
The top thermostat is bad and is not shutting off or switching....
Replace the top thermostat/reset combination and you''l be good!!

Water is not hot

If your water has NO hot water, then click circuit breaker

Next, click red reset button.
Turn off power.
Open cover on water heater.
If heater has 2 covers, open top cover
After re-seting water heater, insulation must be put back over thermostat to prevent cooler air from affecting thermostat.

1) Reset button is a good starting place to check water heater.
Reset clicks off for a number of reasons, including overheated water.

2) Reset will not reset, then replace thermostat.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html

3) Resets clicks on, but clicks off again later, you should diagnose the problem.
Clicking reset is not a hazard
Click the reset as often as you want until you have time to diagnose.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-water-heater.html

4) Reset is not tripped, and you still do not have hot water:
Then use tester on top two screws (T1 - T3 screws -or- 1 and 3 screws) of upper thermostat to check if you have power.

If you have power, then replace thermostat.
If problems continue, a full diagnosis is needed as per the link above

Hot water gets too hot trips off at tank then water gets cool and i push reset button and water gets hot again real hot thentrips off again

It's time to replace your thermostat. Instead of maintaing the correct water temperature, the water is getting so hot it is acivating the safety circuit breaker. If this breaker were to fail, you could have a devastating explosion

Residential electric hot water heater throwing br

If you reset the water heater the first time you were without, Then odds are it is the water heater. probably an element went back. If the power off check for continuity.
