Use a universal remote. Should be able to access the menu that way. The logitech harmony remotes have a huge number of ir codes for every remote. There are codes in their database that don't exist on the original remotes.
Check the remote control for its infrared emission. Check it with fresh batteries. If you wish to get more details about how to check a remote control, please visit this site. Ome among its posts have details about it. Surf the site in "Mosaic" view. Its picture settings should be adjusted. Now it is set to 'wide' format I assumes. If you want to get full screen, the display format should be chaged. Without a remote control, it is not possible.
If your projection TV has some hard buttons on it, then you should be able to get into the menus using the hard buttons, and that MAY allow you to change the picture format, but in all honesty it sounds like you'll want to find a remote for that TV in order to quickly change the format.
You are going to need an original Mitsubishi remote--I do not think in the main menu there is a way to do this without the remote: PART NUMBER FOR THIS REMOTE IS: 290P111010
Almost any Mitsubishi remote that has the FORMAT button on it will work.
If this has helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.
Unfortunately, most of these projection TV's require a remote. You CAN purchase an aftermarket remote. I would look for one that has all the features you need, PIP, screen format etc.... I have found that the Sony RM-VL600 works real well with my Mitsubishi TV... kids thrashed the remotes more than once... This particular unit has system control PROGRAMABLE buttons on the bottom row. I've been able to program them for formatting the screen, setting audio and video... Solved my issue of needing a factory remote... KEN
