Hi big john
To answer your question;
What you have is closed caption(CC) in text mode.
To remove it ;
On the original remote there is a button labeled CC
Hit that button until you see closed caption OFF
Hope this help Cheers

At random a black retangular box appears on the screen

Go into the TV's closed-caption settings and turn off captioning. You'll find it's set for "text" mode right now. What's happening is that in text mode, the set blanks out the part of the screen where the text will go but there isn't any. On channels or programs where captions aren't being broadcast you don't see anything. With the captions turned off the box will go away.

Picture trouble

Good Day, britt93;
It sounds like you have the TV's CLOSE CAPTION on; in the text mode, turn off and you and the TV will be fine.
Good Luck, big IRISH.

Black screen

I work at at a school, and we had the same problem. Turns out, it a Closed Captioning problem.

We found the manual, and it states that "If a large black box covers 80% of your screen, the Text mode is probably set. Press 'Closed Caption' to turn it off." The "Closed Caption" button is on the remote. If you don't have the remote (as in our case), you can go to "Closed Caption" in the menu, and pick something like C4 and T4. That stopped the black box for us.

Black out screen

I had the same problem once with my RCA television. It only happened on certain channels and didn't happen during commercial breaks. If I adjusted the volume on the tv the box went away, but came back shortly after. The problem ended up being some malfunction in the closed captioning. I turned it all off and changed the CC settings and never had the problem again.

Black screen keeps popping up

If a black box appears on the screen, and a small amount of the picture is visible around the border, it means that your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. Go back into the menu, navigate to the closed captions page and set the captions to OFF.

47 inch Pabasonic Project T.V.

This could be part of the text mode, which has to do with the caption. Check and see if it's turned on.
