I have a Marantz SR-8500 receiver. When powered on, it just clicks. I am a hobbyist, but I have repaired many receivers and amps over the last few years. However, I'm stumped on this one and would like some expert advice. Here are the readings and facts so far:
* It looks like the CPU is forcing the receiver into standby every second or so (_standby voltage to power board alternates between 5v and 0v. as measured on the ribon wire),
* the clicking relay is on the standby board, there is no display when relay is clicking EXCEPT when multi button is pushed, then clicking stops and I can see display, change sources for multiroom, etc.
* in no case can I get the receiver to go into service mode (normal or multi room mode)
* _PA_Fail, _PL_Fail and _Heat_Det all measure 4.9v as measured from the ribbon wire on the power board.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1. You will need the schematic to check the proper voltage that feed the regulator and sound chip, usually an 8 pin long pack on the the board.
You can do a Google search for the ESI. You may be able to download the full schematic there and or get the information for you unit service manual.

That is standard protect mode. When a problem, like a wrong voltage or a short is detected from CPU, the system is forced to standby. The clicking noise is the safety switch forced by CPU every tot seconds. there will be no operations apart standby when in protect mode. The CPU higher voltages get shut down to prevent further damage, only low +5V is kept on to show the diagnostic protect mode. The clicking is just a signal that there is a fault, and not the fault itself.

That is a better hint on what the fault could be. On multi room different speakers are used. start checking speakers connection, focus on the speakers that are eventually not used in multi room.
If speakers connections are OK, concentrate on terminal block (input output) circuits, chck the surround mode selector. Testing is mainly done at component level, ensuring that there are no shorts to chassis, cold solder joints (broken ternminal contacts), or faulty components in this areas.
Since the fault is not ocurring when in multi room mode, you can for example exclude circuits like power supply transformer and video board (if present), that are not affected from changing to multi room mode.
If there is no error in there the following troubleshooting will be on the complex audio section (from preamps to power amp final and terminal).
About not getting into service mode, that would be quite unusual. When a marantz is on protect, it still goes in service mode and displays PROTECT at start.

Thanks for the comments. I do have a service manual for this reciever and if you would like me to forward you a copy I'd be more than happy to. I did try to get into service mode several times using the method in the manual, and also tried doing a system reset with no success. I included the voltages because based on my reading of the schematics (which I could be misreading), they seem to be indicating that there there is no fault. It looks to me like if there was a fault with the amp (PA_Fail), the power (PL_Fail) or heat (Heat_det) that a transitor would dump the voltage to ground which would signal the CPU to go into protect mode. Are there other signals that cause the CPU to go to protect? Also, this seems to be a fairly common problem with these receivers (this and and the SR7500 are for the most part the same), but I have not found anyone yet that has pinpointed where the problem could be. Could this be related the 'Check POW5' error that others have seen? I don't get that error, but is that because I don't have a display? I apologize for the many questions, but I've been looking that this for quite a while.
