The ITunesLibrary.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes

1. Quit iTunes.

2. Locate your iTunes folder.

Operating System Default location of iTunes Folder
Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 Documents and Settings[your username]My DocumentsMy Music

Microsoft Windows Vista Users[your username]Music
Microsoft Windows 7 Users[your username]My Music

3. Open your iTunes folder.

4. Drag the iTunes Music Library.xml to the Desktop

5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:
Microsoft Windows "iTunes Library.itl" (in versions of iTunes prior to 4.9 this was called "iTunes 4 Music Library.itl")

6. Open iTunes.
Important: Do not add any content into iTunes at this point.

7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.

8. Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop.
Windows users: Click Open.

Windows XP - 'My Documents" missing!

In windows xp there could be multiple profiles.

Check under c:\documents and settings\

Everything in that folder is a user profile. some are system profiles like "all users", "default user", "Network Service" All the other profiles should be user profiles. In each user profile there is a my documents or a user's documents folder.

You should check there to see if you can find your files.

Disk is Locked Error

If the My Music folder is in the wrong location or incorrectly assigned in the Windows registry, you may see one of the following error messages:

"The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder."
"The folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the Music folder."

If you see one of the above errors, follow these steps to troubleshoot this:

Verify the location of your Windows XP My Music folder. The default location for this folder is
C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music
If you do not have this folder at the default location and have not moved it to another location, consider creating one inside your My Documents folder.
Download and install Tweak UI from the Microsoft PowerToys website at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Note: This utility is for Windows XP only. Please review the system requirements before installing.
Once you have installed Tweak UI, open it from the Start menu.
In the column on the left, click on the plus symbol (+) next to My Computer and select Special Folders.
In the right pane on the Folderlist, click My Music.
Click the Change Location button. You may see a warning message appear with precautions for changing this setting; after reviewing the message, click Yes.
In the resulting window, browse for the My Music folder as described in step 1, and click OK.
Reinstall or open iTunes.
