Possible VRM 0 failure

Hi,
I have gone through and the suggestions on Dell's site and diagnosed the Pre Bios turbo fan noise my Precision 670 is making as 'possible VRM 0 failure'. Do you know if this type of failure is common? Also what is the general cost of a replacement VRM module?

After going out of town for 6 weeks, my Dell Precision 670 would shut down without warning. Sometimes it would happen on start up, sometimes a few minutes into start up, sometimes if i left it on overnight.

Occasionally it would behave and I could work as usual. But this morning it wouldnt start up at all. The Dell LEDs (GYYoff) indicate a "A possible VRM 0 failure has occurred".

Also, the fan now sounds really loud if i turn the computer on.

Is there a solution to this problem? Is it a simple case of replacing the VRM?

    Thanks in advance!

Possible VRM 0 failure - 69bf9f3.jpgHi dear
Short for voltage regulator module, a small module that installs on a motherboard to regulate the voltage fed to the microprocessor. Nearly all motherboards have either a built-in voltage regulator or a VRM, the only difference being that the VRM is replaceable.
the cost is about $80 USD

I also experienced this issue and had to replace the motherboard due to bulging capacitors and the VRM as well. Both were bad. Luckily both parts are available online and were inexpensive.

Alternatively, it could be a faulty motherboard.

I got the same post code lights GYYoff when my 670's motherboard died due to the capacitors exploding.  I also got the same "turbo fan" symptoms.  I first tried the VRM module, as that is what the post code indicated, but that didn't solve a thing.  I then noticed that some of the capacitors had popped and/or were bulging around the CPU sockets.  If so,  you can pick up a cheap replacement motherboard on eBay for around 100.  That's what I did after, and then my problems were gone permanently.

"A possible VRM 1 failure has occurred"

VRM stands for Voltage Regulator Module.

It regulates Voltage for the Processor.

The Processor MUST have a steady, 'clean', supply of Voltage; and it MUST be kept within the tight voltage range, for the Processor.

Too little, or too much; and the Processor turns off. (BIOS turns it off)

Your motherboard supports two Processors.

1) Processor (CPU_0) Zero which is in the middle of the motherboard, next to the PCI Express x16 slot;

2) and Processor (CPU_1) One, which is next to it.

The VRM 1 has failed. Needs to be replaced.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-H2703-PRECISION-470-670-VRM-VOLTAGE-REGULATOR-MODULE-TH-0H2703-WS470-WS670-/380369885440

VRM's used are interchangeable.

IMHO you can remove Processor 1 (CPU_1), and it's VRM, and still use the computer; albiet slower though.

"A possible VRM 0 has occurred"

VRM = Voltage Regulator Module

Here is what the motherboard looks like,

[Note* Posted for photo reference only. Not for advertising.
Besides, I do not see any VRM's plugged in. Means you get the motherboard only, and no VRM's. You need a VRM ]

What the Voltage Regulator Module looks like,

(Again, not for advertising. Click on the photo of the VRM to enlarge)

Notice that your motherboard has two VRM's. This is because there are two Processors.
Apparently the VRM for one of your Xeon processors is bad. (Z-on)

Since it states VRM -> 0, it is for the Processor 0, or in the number 1 processor socket.

What does a Voltage Regulator Module do for a Processor?
Regulates voltage.

A Processor MUST have a steady, 'clean' supply of voltage, AND it must be within the voltage range for the processor.

Since the motherboard uses an Intel E7525 motherboard chipset, it can support Intel Xeon processors, with up to an 800MegaHertz Front Side Bus. (800MHz FSB)

Looking at a typical Intel Xeon single-core processor, with an 800MHz FSB, let me show you it's voltage requirements,

1.287 to 1.400 (DC)

May be just a bad VRM.

However, I would also like you to look at the Electrolytic Capacitors on the motherboard. From what I have seen, those motherboards are notorious about having capacitors go bad.

Take a 2-CPU Precision 670 down to 1-CPU

You probably removed the "primary" CPU,
and the computer cannot operate only with the "secondary" CPU installed.

Move the CPU from the "secondary" slot to the "primary" slot.

Is there a way to make sure both for my processes are working in my 670 Dell. I checked device manager it only registers one CPU. Two are installed with the extra VRM. No error messages are shown.

I would suggest going to the dell website and ensuring that all drivers are updates to their most current version. Also, flash the BIOS to the most current version if it is not showing the same version offered on the site.

Good Luck,

Jesse

Noisy piece of "Dell" lol

That's a confusing description of the events charles.

Have you identified the cause of the original problem - the dead caps? Is Over Voltage a possibility - have you verified the stability of the PSU?

Apologies if I've misunderstood.
