I have a Duotherm rooftop unit for our RV. We turn the A/C on and it will run for about 10 minutes and it kicks the breaker. It doesn't seem to be pushing out the cool air like it should either when it is running those 10 minutes. We have cleaned the fan out and changed the breaker and it continues to do the same thing. Any Suggestions?

Can you describe more of what you are talking about---please? All I know is that the electric is run to the rooftop unit and it is hooked to a breaker. When you turn on the A/C, it will run for few minutes with very little cool air and the breaker will kick.

We were out at the camper today and discovered that the RV Duotherm is hooked up to a 20 amp breaker and a 15 amp breaker. When we turn off the 15 amp breaker the fan and everything won't work. If we turn on the 15 amp breaker, it works but after about 5-10 minutes the 20 amp breaker kicks. We know that the fridge, and plugs in the kitchen area are also on that 15 amp breaker. Does this sound right to anyone?

It is a 13000 or a 13500 btu ac unit. We did have an ac guy out and he looked at and cleaned the unit. He said very little dirt came out but it did help by reducing the amp pull. We are going to check it out this weekend to see how it runs. Hopefully, it won't kick the breaker anymore. After the repair was out and cleaned the unit, it was pulling 19 amps. Before, it would start out pulling lower amps and then continued to rise and then the 20amp breaker would blow.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this is the original unit. It has never been replaced and trailer was bought brand new.

WHAT KING OF CORD ARE YOU USING

  • Anonymous May 26, 2010

The ac roof unit should have its own designated 15 amp for most 11.000 btu  and 20 amp for the larger 13000-15000 btu units. whats not right is the 15 amp breaker you have should be only for ac. check the breaker to be sure someone did not double up other wires on this breaker. What is the main breaker 30 or 20 or 25. It seems when the 15 amp breaker dosent blow the 20 amp does. this would mean that the 20 is the main breaker which seems low for the main unless you or some else replaced ac to a 13000 btu ac when it was a 11000 before , and didnt change wiring from 20 amp and 30 amp main. make sure you are using a 30 amp thick rv cord . many people think they can run these on household orange 12 gage  100 foot cords. I use a welding cord converted for 110 volts. When I repaired rv ac it was always  a weak or soft darken copper cord.

The tag on name plate should say what amp rating it runs at , but if it runs at 19 amps it is to close to to 20 amp rating of the breaker. you need at least 5 amps to adjust for hot days and lower voltage camp site demands.

Duo therm mod. 57915 air conditioner seems to work good , runs for 4-5 minutes then kicks breaker , was kicking 30 amp breaker at camp ground , i've been working on connections to make sure its...

Unit may pull as much as 17-18amps when compressor starts up, but level out to 12-15 amps when up and running. Keeping in mind that is all relative to proper 120v incoming voltage, heavy enough wire to run the application etc. If your AC unit needs cleaning , it may draw an extra amp or 2 . With that said, when your at the park, first thing I'd question is their incoming voltage to RV, and try running fridge etc and anything else on propane if possible. The AC alone should not cause 30amp at source breaker to trip, before 15 0r 20 amp breaker in RV that is connected to AC trips. If it doesn't trip your breaker at home, and all is connected same at park, then I certainly would suspect bad breaker or voltage/wiring at park is the cause. P.S. I noticed you said you have 12 gauge wire (rated at 20 amps) connected to a 20amp breaker at panel, but RV is plugged in to a 15amp receptacle, I will assume with a 15 amp adapter from 30 amp plug. Do you see any hazard regarding 15 amp rating on receptacle? ( just a little advice.)

AC runs for 5 minutes and then circuit breaker

What else do you have running on hydro while AC is running? Such as coffee maker, microwave, water heater, fridge. That 30 amp breaker is your main breaker I assume, or breaker on pole your plugged in to. Keep in mind your AC will normally draw approx. 15-17+ amps momentarily when compressor kicks in to cool, then drop back to 12-15 amps when running normal. If your AC is drawing too much current, then you would only normally trip 20 amp breaker for AC in your panel. Try switching other appliances to gas operation while running AC, such as water heater, and fridge. Make sure incoming voltage is up to specs as well . (115-120 volts)
If water heater takes 5-8 amps, and fridge takes same when they are calling for power, you'll be close or over the 20amp mark when you consider your on board converter etc. as well. That only leaves approx 10 amps for AC that requires approx 15 amps to run, and up to 20amps when compressor kicks in. If you switch all those other items over to propane, and it still happens, then a current draw test should be done on AC unit to see if perhaps a capacitor is faulty, or possible compressor faulty.

Unit won't turn on

WHEN A COMPRESSOR FIRST STARTS TO RUN THERE IS AN INITIAL HIGH STARTING CURRENT(30 AMPS PLUS),BUT THIS SHOULD DROP BACK DOWN TO RUNNING CURRENT PRETTY QUICKLY.IF IT MAINTAINS THIS HIGH STARTING CURRENT FOR A WHILE THEN THIS GENERALLY INDICATES THE COMPRESSOR AT FAULT,BUT!!!!! ALSO CHECK TO SEE IF THE FAN IS NOT SEIZED. DISCONNECT THE FAN ELECTRICALLY THEN RUN THE UNIT. IF THE STARTING CURRENT MAINTAINS APPROX 6 AMPS THEN THE FAN IS AT FAULT!........HOPE THIS HELPS!!

My RC air conditioner (Duotherm) kicks the circuit breaker every time I turn it on. It used to kick the circuit breaker every so often, but lately it kicks it immediately if I try to turn on the AC.

Try replaceing the start or run capacitor to the compressor. If no help you can install a start assist capacitor, it helps to start a tight compressor.

Throwing breaker

Throwing the MAIN BREAKER should not happen. Calculate the distance to your main box. Tell me the wire gauge or breaker amperage. Whatever you do, do not get a larger breaker! If its a breaker on this unit Its probably doa with current leak possibly. DO NOT USE fire hazzard IF SHE TRIPS!!! let me know if its your main breaker inthe house. Hopefully you dont have crappy cloth wiring.

Ac Problems

You must have too many things running on that circuit. Check your connection to the power box.Loose connection on the receptacle can cause the breaker to trip or too many things running on the same circuit. If the breaker is old it might need to be replaced.
