These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.
When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.
Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...
Problem #1) Convergence
Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...
*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Hi,
You have a convergence failure. Usually Replacement of 2 STK ICs and blown fuses fixes the problem with Sony.
If all 3 distinct images are visible, there is also a 5A pico fuse in the power supply open. (separate board on left side if chassis). Remove the power supply module and examine from the top, looking for 2 fuses (usually green, like small resistors). If you are experienced, fuses can be replaced from the top. If not, you have to access the foil side of the board and unsolder/replace. Extremely difficult replacement job.
If only one color outline is visible, a 3.15A Pico fuse is open. 6 fuses located under STK heat-sinks, (one for each adjust function, Red Vert, Red Hor, etc.).
Use an ohmmeter to check the fuses.
There are "thin film" components near the IC pins that can be a problem. When solder is being removed from the STK IC pins, solder can be accidentally removed from these other components, or solder tip touches them and causes then to physically become disconnected. Very difficult to put back in place because of the small size involved.
After replacing the STK ICs and open fuse(s) TV is fixed, just needs minor adjustment. Push the Flash Focus button on the front of the TV. This should align things pretty close. Then minor adjust in customer convergence adjust. Do this first in Normal or Wide size mode, then HD mode. If Flash focus will not complete the cycle, you still have a convergence fault, check your solder connections and fuses. Also look at the small components near the IC pins to see if any are twisted out of square. If the thin film components have moved during the soldering process, probably electrical connection is open.
Use our Convergence Gallery to confirm your fault. Service in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, etc.

Hi rfrancis1234,
You have a failure in the convergence circuit of your television. The good news is that it's repairable. The bad news is not by you. But, it's not that expensive with respect to replacement cost of the set. In my shop you would probably be in the $200-250 range provided that 1) You brought in the set and 2) The problem in not with the DCU.
Borrow a mini van and take out the seats. Lay down a blanket and gently slide the set in on its back - yes, on its back. If you take it yourself you will save up to $100 for a projection TV service call. Take the set to a local, reputable shop - not a big repair facility. Bigger place = bigger overhead. More than a few techs is a big place. What I charge may not be what they charge, but it will still be well worth doing.
Good luck!

The Sears repair man came out and knew right away that that the TV has a convergence problem and ordered the board. He said the 2 big heat sinks should be warm and they are stone cold. Thanks for the info.
