I have an old Sony XM-1000 amp in my car, hooked up to the rear speakers. It worked fine for about 2 years. Yesterday while driving and listening on low volume, the rear speakers suddenly stopped playing sound and it seemed I lost most bass in the front too. I checked and the amp went into protect. After trying unsuccessfully a few different things, I unhooked the amp and turned the fader of the head unit all the way to the front. I noticed the front speakers sounded really bad too (virtually no bass). I turned up the bass and the sound is really distorted coming from the front speakers. Is it possible that the problem lies with the head unit and the amp is still ok? (Head unit: Pioneer DEH-P560MP 4x50W)
Thanks for your help

If the amp still goes into protect mode, the easiest thing to do is disconnect the RCA cables from the amp and see if still goes into protect mode (after turning off/on). If it does, the issue lies in the amp or the wiring to/from the amp (most likely case). Check to make sure no speaker wires came loose and touched +12V or ground (car body). From the sound of it, my guess is something internal to the amp died and will need repair.
