Garmin edge 305 heart rate sensor does not work

The heart rate sensor does not work. Battery seems okay. Ensured that system settings - accessories enabled the heart rate sensor, and even forced a rescan. The unit just does not pick up signals from the heart rate sensor belt.

I too am experiencing the same issue and have just replaced the battery (CR2032) within the Heart Rate monitor strap.

Seems like we're having a run on this. I have the same problem. I did the following and still no signal:
    1. Rescanned for the HR monitor (yes, it's enabled!)
    2. Really wet down the electrode pads
    3. Checked the contacts inside the battery compartment to make sure they are in contact with the battery bottom and side.
    4. Replaced the battery with a fresh 3V lithium- same standard as the factory

Everything else works but the HR monitor doesn't! Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Yeah same prob here, have just replaced battery in monitor belt but have not tried it yet. Read somewhere to ensure that belt is right way up i.e garmin logo is right way up? will try that also.

Same here. I have done all the above. Sometimes I will get a reading and then it will just disapear. I going to send this back !

  • Anonymous May 29, 2008

Actually I managed to solve the problem by downloading and installing the latest edge 305 firmware versions for the system + GPS firmware. For some reason my Garmin Edge arrived with a GPS firmware version of 0 and a system firmware version which was out of date.

Mine stopped working the same time the cadence stopped working. I thought it was the receiver itself, but I replaced the battery in the cadence sending unit. That fixed that. But nothing I tried worked on the HR Monitor transmitor. I ended up ordering a new one and it work right away.

I've had the same problem with the HRM. If you go into settings under devices and hit the "Restart Scan" it will usually find it.

I have the same problem with a 305 receiver that has been in storage since September 2006. The unit will not recognized the HM belt. I have changed the battery, cleaned the contacts, varied the position, and repeatedly initiated rescans. Nothing has worked. My local bike shop/dealer suggested a complete computer reset or reboot, but neither he nor I can figure out how to do that. I don't see any obvious way to remove the 305 battery or any reset button. I know the unit was working with the same strap in 2006 because I can download the data.

    Any help would be appreciated.

same problem, tryed everything, but it won't work.

  • scottandheat Mar 21, 2009

Same problem. Worked great the first 1.5 years. Have replaced the battery in the strap. no go. Did a rescan, no go. Repositioned the belt repeatedly, no go. Cleaned the strap. No go. Getting pretty frustrated over spending the kind of money on this unit!

I had the same problem on my first ride with the Garmin. Fortunately my riding buddy had an identical setup that was working fine, so we could troubleshoot. Neither his strap nor his 305 worked for me but any combination of my units or his units worked fine for him. After determining that I did have a heartbeat (!) I relocated the strap a few inches to the left (Garmin Logo under my left pec). Has worked fine since.

When my HRM wasn't working I went into the settings under devices and hit the restart scan option. It immediately found my heart rate.

Not sure if any of you have tried this already.

I couldn't get an accurate heart rate reading on my Forerunner 305. Sometimes it would say my heart rate was 55 when I was running, it would not even display when I sat down (weird!), and was just erratic. I borrowed a friend's heart rate monitor, paired it with my 305 and it worked fine so I ordered another monitor off of Amazon. Well I got it today and it wouldn't work! So I did a search online and found this article: http://www.runbulldogrun.com/forerunner-305/i-fixed-my-garmin-forerunner-305-heart-rate-monitor/

I followed his instructions, bent the little wire out a bit and it works perfect now! YAY!!!

I fixed my problem as well. The actual sensors are the ribs in the strap, not the plastic housing like I thought. I cleaned the rib sections on the strap with acohol and it's been working flawlessly ever since. I think there was some reside coating from production on it. Once I cleaned it off, it was able to pick up my body reading.
I hope this helps someone !

Heart rate monitor not working, changed battery and fiddled with battery to make sure contacts touch, still not working

You need to go in and reset you heart monitor so it is set with the device. Go into accessories; heart rate monitor and reset it. For some reason, it loses it's connection with the monitor and needs to be reset. Especially if you haven't used it for a hwile. My son borrowed my garmin and heart reate monitor. I thought he broke it, but it just needed to be reset.

My garmin forerunner 305 HRM suddenly stopped working. I thought it was a bad battery so replaced that, and still nothing. Any other suggestions?

I found this on the internet......

In the battery compartment there’s a gold contact that touches the top of the battery (+ve) which was in a position that would never make contact with the battery. I bent it out slightly, made sure the battery was seated correctly (i.e. flat) and as if by magic my heart rate appeared on the large Garmin display!

Also found this..........

I Have had the same problem couple of times (and forgotten each time how I solved it). I figured it out just now and this is what I did.

1) turn on unit and put on heart monitor (make sure battery is good and wet heart strap)
2) using the mode button navigate the menus to: Settings: General: Accessories: Heart Rate Monitor
3) Once in the Heart Rate Monitor option make sure "Yes" is selected and then use the arrow buttons to highlight "Restart Scan" . Press the enter button to rescan for your heart monitor. (I had to rescan twice)
Go back to the main monitor screen to see if you are recieving heart rate signals.

I am not sure why a manual rescan needs to be done every time but it would be nice if Garmin fixed this issues in a unit software update (my unit has software version 2.80

Garmin 305 Edge and GSC 10 not receiving one another

Solution copied from Garmin

Pairing the Edge 305 and sensors
Once you have installed the Garmin Edge 305 and the cadence sensor they need to be paired. As they communicate wirelessly with each other the Edge needs to connect to each sensor before it can receive input from it.

The initial pairing needs to be done away from other wireless systems this allows the Edge to pick up the sensors it is supposed to be monitoring. This is a little like black magic, but it seems to work quite easily.

The cadence sensor has a small press contact which puts the sensor into pairing mode. The HRM just seemed to connect by itself.

Subsequent pairing is much faster as the Edge 305 seems to remember which sensors it is paired with. If you have problems or need to change one of the sensors then you can use a setup feature to either turn the sensor off or to re-pair it.

Recently purchased a edge 305cadenec/heart rate monitor.cadence is not coming up on the monitor. every thing else is working. Pushed the reset button on the sensor the speed light was fine the cadence...

Suggest you first try changing the battery in the sensor...then reset, then rescan for it on unit. It seems like quite a few have been shipped with dud batteries.

Good luck!

Distance and average speed don't compute.

My solution included changing the battery in the cadence sensor (GSC10). You might not need to.
1. After changing battery, take bike outside. Turn on Edge 305 to acquire satellites (might not be necessary..)
2. Press reset button on GSC10. Should see red/green flash.
3. On Edge 305, go to SYSTEM.
4. Scroll down to ACCESSORIES.
5. On Accessory page, scroll to bottom, under Cadence Sensor, and press RESTART SCAN.
That fixed my Edge 305 - cadence and speed do appear now.
