I've setup Nokia phones with 2G SIM's and I've had it running under GSM frequencies using a Optus 2G GSM SIM card; works fine. I've also put 3G SIM's in 2G Unlocked Phones and haven't had any issues before.
Have you tried putting in a 3G SIM and had problems?
Is your phone locked or unlocked?
Be careful of the terminology, some people get "3G" mixed up with the company "3" which is owned by Hutchison.
For example, if the phone is locked to 3, and you try and put an Optus/Voda/Telstra/AT&T SIM inside it will not work.
If it's just a Generic Branded 3G phone you should be fine.
Make sure your phone is unlocked, then purchase a SIM online or back at the AT&T store.
You should be able to take your phone back to the "stupid people" at the AT&T store and have them register a 3G SIM and you shouldn't have any problems; just tell them it's a unlocked phone.
