For the TOMTOM XXL540 while connected to your PC hold the poer button down for about 15 or 20 seconds the device will shutdown then restart when reset
Check Tomtom's site.
Connect your device to computer.
Open the device on your computer (for Vista, click on Computer, then whichever drive/usb port your tomtom is connected to. This will give you access to the actual tomtom's internal data, and not the tomtom home data that is on your computer.)
My issue is that I deleted my Temp files while my tomtom was initially installing. It was using Temp to install the data, and I got rid of it. When I tried to start up the tomtom, it said No Map Data was available.
I had to delete the USA/Canada/Mexico directory to delete the maps that it had partially installed.
Now I've gone to tomtom home and re-initialized the map-getting process, and it's going well. Taking a looong time, but going well.
This is for the Tomtom XXL 540-t (traffic for life)
I wish you luck!
Tomtom has a tiny hard to see reset button near the docking base . Press that for 15 sec .

Well, I've been all over my TomTom even with a magnifying glass and I cannot see the reset button or hole or whatever it is. Removed the stickers and pushed a paperclip into every hole and it didn't ever work. Finally hit this site and saw the instructions to press the power button for 15 seconds and that worked. That comment is on this site only and not on the TomTom website that I can find and certainly not in the book. Big Fail TomTom.
Don't know about all tomtoms, but the 910 does have a reset button inside the recess for the windshield support. The newer ones don't seem to have a physical button to press.
