I have a problem with a Proton 320 clock radio (it isn't listed in the Fixya category, so I selected the next closest--the R5A) . I took it apart to examine the bulb for the tuning dial, which was burned out. After seeing how large the bulb is (one of those ''grain of wheat'' bulbs), I reassembled the radio in reverse order. Everything went smoothly. But then, something weird started to happen. The radio won't stay turned off. The OFF button works, but then a few seconds later, the radio comes back on again. Any idea of what could be going on?

I think I have fixed the problem.
Previously, when I had the unit disassembled, I repeatedly pressed the ON/OFF buttons in hopes of "clearing" them, but that didn't work. However, after noticing that there was some black dusty debris inside the unit, I used a can of compressed air and blew it out. I also concentrated the air on the ON and OFF switches. After reassembling the radio and plugging it in, the radio did not turn on by itself. I was then able to operate the radio properly and when switched off, it stays off.
Based on what took place, I'm hoping that the debris was the issue and not some flaky component on the circuit board. I did try tapping various sides of the unit and repeatedly pressing the buttons to see if I could trigger the power problem again, but it won't recur. It seems I have fixed it. :-)
It is several weeks now since I commented on fixing the problem. The radio continues to function normally, so the correction is holding. If anybody runs into trouble with the buttons on their Proton 320, they should also try this solution of using compressed air on the button internals, to remove any dust/debris that may be causing unexpected behavior.
